I spoke to a friend who is a certified welder all positions and pipe up to an inch. It would cost $300 an hour minimum 1 hour per rim, He will x-ray and ultrasound the weld when finished. He is allowed to make 1 repair pass else the rim is considered trash and you still pay for his time, as the defects most likely come from the original stamped steel casting.

I'm gonna cry if I don't get new wheels before FR11.

^^^ I could see it for a trailer queenn, but to drive it on the road it would have to be really well done...therefore not cheap...

I have a friend who roadraces a hawk gt with his front rim widened (or banded, new term for me) a half inch. It was 350 bucks, but they did a gorgeous job...like I said, the weld would have to be perfect not to leak...Unless guys are putting tubes in them, and thats just nuts on a modern wide rim at any kind of speed....

Sounds like banded steelies are just as expensive as 3pc wheels, so why not just get those?

I didn't know how much it was going to cost me to get it done right. I know someone who would do it for $50 a wheel and he is not a certified welder but has done several sets. Obviously, not what I wanted to do hence why I asked.

I'm looking to pick up a set of wheels for under $500.

To do it right..prolly is. I"m sure steel is cheaper to work with than aluminum (easier to weld too); but its still prolly not cheap...unless somebody is doin it way too cheap....and you still have a steel wheel when your done...blah

I look at it this way, is it worth someone elses life to risk to do it? Kind of like street racing, it is fun and all but when something happens, it is normally really bad. Some get away with it for many years soem never get past the first time. After driving more than 150mph for more than 13 years, I don't trust alot of things that might be iffy.
