Can you put a different model or year in a 2000 focus?

I am a stupid college girl that knows nothing about cars and I bought a 2000 focus from a girl and its been two months and I was driving home and I couldn't accelerate anymore. I took my car into a ford dealership and they said I need a complete new engine. On craigslist some people are selling them but they are 2005. will that not work? Sorry if that sounds so dumb, I really don't know anything. I would appreciate any help possible!!

here's what you will run into if you want to swap the motor. unless you find the same type of motor, you will more then likely have to change out motor mounts, which means you will have to remove the old, and weld in new brackets, you will need a new wiring harness, computer, and possibly a transmission. i don't know what kind of motor/tranny you have but these are the normal things that happen when you go to swap a motor. personally, if i were you, i would find out how much the car itself is really worth, and then find out what exact type of motor you have, and price it. then go from there, heck, if the car is only worth a couple of thousand and a motor replacement is going to run you about the same then unless you really love the car (this happens to me) trade the car off and get something else.

thanks for the reply!! its kind of a messy situation cause I took out a loan for 5k and since I don't have the money to pay it off and my insurance wont cover I feel a little swamped. But that is good to know that I would have to look into all those other things needing to change.

you might also get on the phone and call places and see how much they would charge to rebuild/replace the motor. i would imagine to have it done will run you about 2 grand...and id be pretty sure you couldn't put put down to wichita and have my friends and i do it (granted everyone had the time lol) so probably your best bet would be to call around and see what everyone would charge. sounds like your last owner didn't care for the car much....

Before you do that, see if you can get a different opinion; you may have a case of an hole dealership trying to take advantage of you. I and several other members have had the same issue, and was resolved easily by getting a new fuel pump. It was recalled and should be replaced at no cost. Hope this helps!

yeowch yeah and i ran into that didn't think of it. probably a good first step would to have a dealer (go to another one then who you went to) and have them do a diagnostic on your fuel pump. i had a fuel pump go in july and what was happening was my car would not start. at all. trust me i wasn't happy 'cause i had to put my other car back together (restoring a car takes a lot of time on jack stands) and drive it around until ford came and got my focus.

Thank you so much for all of your replies. I should do that! I know after the diagnostic though form my dealership they said there was water in the engine a cracked radiator and a couple other things that totaled to 5,000 for parts and service. But I was going to take out a loan to have them fix it because I already have a loan on my car. I am not even sure what to do. I am going to go to another place though cause they might be able to give me a better quote. thanks

whoa whoa whoa what ended up costing $5000? If you could post a list on here, I'm sure you'll find some of these charges to be bogus and be able to find the parts and labor much cheaper.

5 grand in repairs is bogus definitely. unless you need to replace EVERYFREAKINGTHING under that hood.
