Oh I'm sorry, I read your last post wrong! Well, I hope whatever they're doing to it now will fix it too! Having your car stuck at the dealer is never fun.

Almost the same thing happened to me except my key wouldn't turn when I had it in the ignition. Sometimes it would't come out but, I finally just pulled hard. The one time it would't work at all was when I was getting gas at a Casey's. Felt real dumb. Had to call a tow truck. Got the ignition changed and haven't had the problem since.

I also have the same problem . It seems to be a very common problem with the car. Does anyone know how to push getting it recalled. I know there is an agency to report common defects. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/ but this is the only thing I know of. please respond. Please report it. Hopefully it will help .

It sounds like the key release is just not being released. Either by electrical or mechanical means. If replacing the ignition lock fixes it, I would assume that the release mechanism is sticking or breaking down or wearing out. Some posts mentioned that there is a "communication problem with the shifter and the lock", but this seems less likely since most problems like this in my experience are mechanical in nature. If the release device is part of the lock, than replacing it will fix it. It also means that we can maybe prevent this with some sort of lock lubricant or removing it and cleaning periodically!

It wasn't the lock and had nothing to do with the steering column. They replaced the entire shifter, then it worked fine.

I had a similar problem, but my key would not go in the ignition. I called ford dealership and they sent a tech down. He shoved the key in the ignition and it wouldn't turn, tried for almost an hour he even took apart the steering column. Three hous later I had to have my car towed to the dealership on a three day weekend. It took 6 days and almost $400 for them to replace the cylinder or tumbler in the ignition.

Focusedat50, is your car a manual or auto tranny ?
Just wondering since they said the car/ECU doesn't know it's in 'park.'

Also, resetting the ECU won't release the key either ?
