needs some TLC and I am getting frustrated...

Catalytic converter, new suspension parts and some small other small stuff, but shops are so ignorant about this car and parts stores can't get the parts.

I am just a poor planner.

I made a $700 mistake not just going to a dealer.

I don't trust dealers.

dealers have been the worst to deal with. I had a serious issue at 38,000 when the timing belt tensioner bit it and the engine was toast, they did not even hook the alternator up correctly. I don't trust the dealerships at all. Besides that the catalytic converter from the dealer is $2500 vs the 350 from cfm.

well getting the parts at the local stores is not the best thing you can do, why dont you get them online and then just take the car to the shop and have them installed?

You have a point. I have a bad dealer here and a good dealer at a nearby town. My bad dealer - where I never go anymore - did an expensive "try a part and see if it works, no? try another part..and on and on" The good dealer has mechs who know the car.

non-professional mechanics

I admitted that I was a poor planner. ...but for some reason, I think a professional should be a professional...I am, when someone comes to me, they don't need to do research beforehand and bring me all the stuff to do the job, they come to me and I am the professional...weird idea huh?

I just don't get the whole mechanic mindset. Bring me the car, then I will look up the parts and try to order them...then days later will still have problems with the car.

I am specifically ranting because I need a new catalytic converter, took it to the muffler shop that does custom exhaust work on cars here, after dropping it off for the day, they told me that they would not even work on my car. I was told that if I put an after market catalytic converter on that I would get a CEL because my car is California standards and none of the after-market converters for the car are California rated. Two phone calls later I got confirmation from CFM that this is BS. Soooo, let's see, white collar non-mechanic goes online, makes a couple of phone calls and debunks a "professionals" opinion. I have had this happen too often. I am now of the opinion that no mechanics are professionals.

Before I get scathing remarks, I know that there is a small minority of mechanics that are professionals, and there are some others that are experienced on our cars and do a fair job. It's just that I have not run into them, and my one dealing with Sheehy Ford in Richmond on the week of my mothers funeral when my engine crapped out (kept the car for a month, tried to charge me for warranty work, did not call me to tell me that my clutch was shot when they were replacing the engine, did not connect the ground on the alternator at the block so I fried two before it was found and the first one before I even got home, the list goes on) keeps me away from dealers all of the time now.
