Zetec engine identification
This is my first post so here I go. I just got this engine and was reading up on the zetec as a whole and found out that there are differant veriants of this engine. No I would like to know if some would so kind as to identify mine for me? it is a 2.0l Ford Zetec engine made in 1997 (manufacture marks on the block, head, ect). It has a cast iron block, cast aluminim valve cover (painted light grey) with a plastic sparkplug wire cover with "ford 16v zetec vct" on it. So would the cams, cam gear, underdrive pulleys, ect that you buy for the focus work on this engine?

looks like one from a ford contour or zx2, the vct on the spark plug means variable cam timing. it would take alittle work for focus cams to work in it due to the vct solenoid on one cam. the underdrive pulley should work along with some other focus parts with no or little modification.

im very confused about htis......lol. Honestly i thought the only enigines in a focus were 2.0 zetec. 2.0 and 2.3 duratec.......what are all the different variations of zetec???

Well there is the 2.0l zetec with vct which came in contours and zx2 escorts and the SVT Focus. No Focus came with VCT with the exception of the SVT. And then over seas the zetec come as small as either a 1.4 or 1.6, 1.8 and the 2.0L

I used to have a ZX2 MTX and would almost always lose to a regular mtx Focus. So I would say not.

the Zx2 is rumored to have more aggressive cams, is lighter, and it also has far shorter gear ratios. The zx2 should be faster.

I have had some trouble with ZX2s in the past. Even mildly modded (before some of my newer mods), my Focus would struggle pretty hard to pull slowly from a basically stock ZX2. Those cars are quicker than they look and quicker than a lot of people give them credit for.
