shift problem after new TPS install

2000 Focus SE. 2.0L. Automatic.

CEL was on. Codes were P1120 and P0122. Went to AutoZone and asked for a TPS. The one they gave me was the thick one. The one I have is the thin one. Read another post that said the TPS from a 2002 Escape is the same as the 2000 Focus. So I special order the TPS for the 2002 Escape. Get it today and it looks identical to the one I'm replacing. It's got some different numbers on the housing, but otherwise looks exactly the same.

Install the new TPS. Reset the CEL by disconnecting battery for about 30 minutes. Take it for a drive.

I had an early shift from 1st to 2nd. Once in second it revs to about 4k RPM and then settles back down. Same problem each time I stop and go.

Get it back home and reinstall the old TPS and it's back like it was before I replaced the TPS.

So, is the TPS from a 2002 Escape really the same as the 2000 Focus SE? Even though I have the thin TPS, should I just take the thick one that the AutoZone computer is saying is the correct one?

That is what mine was doing when Ford replaced it. Push in the clutch and wee 4grand. So I dont think the new one is any good.

No good because it's not the right one? Or no good, because it could be bad out of the box?

i have a 2000 se with 2.0l zetec and i have run out of ideas we were haveing shifting problems then it all of a sudden ran a code p1120 (i think you all know what that means) so to make a long story short we bought a new tps and it does the same early shifting into first and second so the guy at the garage said the new tps was bad so we went and bought another and it did the same ford says the same as all the other guys and that is that you gotta buy the whole throttle body with the tps and pig tail is this my only option or is there something i'm doin wrong please help

I wish Autozone/garages/dealers knew what they were talking about. The Escape TPS is identical. The numbers are different, but the voltage readings are the same (I tested this when I did my TB/TPS). I don't remember the voltage readings at idle vs. WOT, but I can dig them up if someone wants them.

You should replace your TPS with whatever was on the car, and not what Autozone tells you. Their system is wrong. Trust me. If you need the thin one, have them page through their system until they find a year/model/engine that used the thin one, or find the Escape one that used it. They can bring up a picture of what you are buying. Or, at least Advance Auto can.

Anyway, if you have the Escape one, and it is thin, and that is what was on your car before...most likely you need to flip it 180* and reinstall it. Take the TPS off and face it in the other direction. For example, if the wiring was facing down, make it so it faces up. Usually, this is the problem. If not, then the sensor is probably faulty and you should measure it with a voltmeter.

My situation that made me learn this was kinda special. I was installing a FC 65mm TB, which, unbeknownst to me, is designed to be used with the MTX TPS (thin one), and my car had the other one. So, after trying every position on the TB and every combination of TPS you could, I measured the voltage, and realized I needed the thin one. A little "alteration" to my wiring harness later and the thin TPS later..I was good to go.
