'05 Chrome grill surround: to sand or not to sand

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on any of the threads... I'm taking the plunge and color-matching my grill, getting rid of the chrome surround. Several posts have mentioned sanding using 200-800 grit sandpaper to remove the chrome from the grill -- others have said that they didn't need to do it (that the primer stuck well enough to the chrome). Could anyone with first hand experience weigh in on this topic? Sand papering the grill just doesn't sound, well, fun... If I'll get significantly better results I'll do it though.

Somewhat tangential -- does anyone have pics of an '05 or above where you painted the whole grill, not just the surround? I've only seen black Foci w/ black surround and black mesh (mesh typically not painted, just factory black insert). Has anyone painted both (like red surround w/ red mesh, etc.)? If so, could you post pics? I didn't see anything in the ZX4 galleries... TIA.

Random rant: I still can't believe no one has made a decent aftermarket grill for the '05+. Billet and silly ebay tribal grills just aren't cutting it. I mean, sheesh, there's a few hundred thousand '05+ Foci on the road -- isn't someone willing to cash in on that fact?? Just a plain grill, w/ no emblem and inner honeycomb (and no chrome) would sell at least 25,000 units, right?!?

someone made a photochop of the stock grille without the emblem and ALOT of people agreed it was too large of an opening... the emblem breaks up the amount of space that is actually there....

and yes if you are gonna paint it... sand it! the paint wont like the stick to the chrome at all! and i have experience with painting the stock grille i painted the chrome to black on my 05...

I kept the chrome and swapped in the ST silver-grey grill. But I may paint the chrome when I do my mirrors.

Does anyone have a better suggestion than http://www.paintscratch.com for getting matching, color coded spray paint? Their prices seemed decent, but I'm pretty uneducated. They offer factory matched paint, clear coats, primers, etc. Thx all for the feedback.

yes sand the chrome. remove all the chrome plating. you can buy color matched paint from just about any body shop. you have a paint code in your door just give them that they should be able to make it rather quickly while you wait and usually cheaper than going thru a paint source. also expect to may more for colors with alot of red. as red is a more expensive color.
