Once the gas light comes on, how many miles can I go?

Once the "gas light"(when you are low on gas) comes on in the Focus, how many more miles can you drive? I know it depends for different cars so a Focus forum seems like the best place to ask.

Here's how you find out:
Next time your low gas warning comes on, get gas right away, and fill it up. How much gas did you pump? Let's say you pumped 10.8 gals. How big is your tank? For example, lets say 12.5 gals. In this example, You had 1.7 gals in the tank when your light came on ( 12.5, minus 10.8 = 1.7 )

The 2000-4 Focus has a 13.8 gallon tank, in my experience when the fuel light comes on there are 3 gallons left in the tank, so you should be able to go at least 60 miles once it turns on.

im not to sure if this is all right... if you actually top off the focus tank you can easily go near 400 miles, on a reg focus 5 speed, and when i refill i put in from 11-12 gallons, meaning i have about 1-2 gallones left, thats prolyl why ford says the focus can go 500 miles before a fill up and i never got past 400 on the highway, now that i fill it til it almost comes out i can get 400 in town with some highway

Things change when you transition to all-highway driving. A few weeks ago I drove from Cleveland to north of NYC to pick up a set of ST170 bumpers (about 1,000 miles round trip), and on the return leg I was getting a ridiculous amount of mileage per tank. I stopped about a quarter of the way across PA on the way back to fill up and I had about 420 miles on the trip OD and only put in ~13.2 gallons (so there was still some left.) And that was with the AC on max, the temperature knob at ~10 o'clock and the fan on 1, in addition to me running on 17" wheels with 300mm front brakes and 4.06 drive gears. Had I been running on my 16s with the air off I'm sure the mileage would've been even better.

I generally will take it another 30 miles or so, once it gets "below the E" that's when it starts to scare me pretty bad. I try not to let it get that low in the first place.

And one tank for me is usually ~300 miles. Highest I remember getting was like near 330 all highway (atx, 80+ mph ).
