Talking New AutoX'er who would like some advice

So, I have a 2006 Ford Focus ZX3 that I bought and was plannning on modding for track use. Well, I went to my first AutoX event, just to watch, last week and I'm hooked. Now, I really don't know a lot about what types of upgrades I should do to the car to prepare it, but I was noticing that the car does have a bit of body roll to it. Anyways, would love any help from anyone that can!!

BTW, I'm looking into upgrading the suspension, the exhaust, and possibly get a set of rims strictly for AutoXing. I purchased a short-throw shifter and I'm planning on installing it in two weeks. Other than these, I'm not entirely sure about what else to do.

My advice comes from Carrera26's signature....

Don't waste another minute waiting on parts, or anything else. Just get out there and start racing! You will suck at first, and you will be slower than many other cars, but the only thing you will regret is not starting earlier...

^^^Ya beat me to it! I couldn't agree more!
Prepare the driver before you prepare anything else. Period. End of story.
You're only throwing money away if you don't.

1) Ride along with as many people as you can (preferably the top performers).
2) Have as many of those same people ride along with you.
3) Ask questions. Observe. Take notes. Don't discount constructive critisizm.
4) Get out to as many events as you can, and make as many runs as you can.
^^^Practice. Practice. Practice.

I'd also recommend checking to see if there are any Evolution Driving Schools in your area:
http://www.autocross.com/evolution/m...utocrossevents
^^^That $200-$300 will be worth WAY more than any comparably priced suspension or engine upgrade.

BTW, short throw shifter already throws you into STS (versus H Stock).
Seriously...get some miles under your belt first.
Only then will you know what really needs to be upgraded.
You may very well find that tires is the only thing you need.

Last, but not least:

EDIT:
Oops...I see you've been here since April, but regardless, welcome to the "Racing, Rally & Autocross" forums.
^^^Where I moved this thread, since this is a very general "racing" question.

Well, I'm already in STS because the previous owner of the car put aftermarket 17's on it and an exhaust tip (which will be removed and replaced with a new exhaust anyways)
I definately agree. Most of the SCCC SOLOs I've been talking to told me to get to as many events as possible, which is fine, because I work every other week and have off on those weekends. I'm actually going to be doing a couple of dry runs July 7th the day before my first event at Belle Chasse Naval Base in Louisiana, so I can get a feel for the car. I'm just really excited about this, I think it's more skillful than track or street racing IMO.

haha, thanks for the late welcome. I just bought the car in February and it's a fun car. My friend Jason had a 2002 SVT with a Saleen kit on it and he recommended I come poke my head over here and read some of the threads.

Definitely, check this thread out. (It's one of the "Read First" threads at the top of this forum area):
A Novice Guide to Autocross
^^^There's some great tips in there.

And...glad to see another "L" class (lady) on the track!
^^^My wife just ran her first event last month.
I've got HUGE dents on the passenger floor from riding with her...
I was trying to hit the brakes and they weren't there!

So, what wheels are on the car now? (17X? and offset?)
Tires? (Brand/Model/Size)

My friend Damon who AutoX's his SVT Cobra gave me that site and I read it a few days ago. It's pretty helpful.
The ones on there are Nex-O Hyperlight 17X7 and there are Fuzion low profiles on them. I personally wouldn't have gone with that rim, but I'm too busy to figure out what I want and get new ones.
I'm definately a decent driver (being from Jersey originally) and I'm looking forward to improving.

Get a SNELL approved helmat and don't spend any more money until you get better and learn about your car.
Glad you are addicted!
