Help, AC works intermitently

Hello all,

I have a 2000 Focus Ztec with AC. It has automatic tranny.

My AC takes a long time to cool (15 minutes after starts) and it just cool on the 2 right side air vents. But when it cools, the 2 left air vent get cool after. When it gets old, it is intermitent. The AC green light is always ON as long I repushed back on it.

What could it be? Could it be the AC relay, how can I replace it? I opened the fuse box under the hood, and cannot take the AC relay off to see if it is damaged.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

well.. first off... is it just not cold enough for your liking?

i would take a thermometer and put it in one of the vents you think is the warmest, and turn the a/c on full blast, and see what it reads...

if it reads below 60 degrees, youre fine... if not then...

try taking it in and seeing if theres a problem with the a/c lines.. have a shop do a leak test

the relays are in there pretty good(and usuially dont just go out) but you have to tug on it pretty good to get it out...

i highly doubt its the relay though

its possible that the a/c compressor is going bad, and thats why its intermittant... could be cycling on and off because its goin bad..

When it is not cold, I can even hear the compressor working.

I used to have a Buick Park Avenue and the AC relay went bad.

I would say you need to recharge your system first before you go pulling things out. Go to your favorite car parts store and pick up a AC recharge kit, shouldnt be more than $20. Then read the instructions as to where to plug it into the ac system.

Did you perhaps mean to say "can't even hear," rather than "can even hear?"

If the relay was bad, the compressor would not be "working" when it wasn't cold.

But if the A/C system was low on refrigerant, that would also stop the compressor from working, as A/C systems have a low pressure switch that turns the compressor off (to prevent damage) if the pressure is too low.
