Fob and key question

I just bought my 03 SVT yesterday and the dealer didn't have the fob remote. I also only got one key. My questions are: Can I buy any old Focus FOB and have it programmed in? ...and... Can I get the "security keys" copied anywhere or do those have to come from Ford?

Thanks guys!

you can get the keys cut anywhere, but in order to program then, you need at least 2 keys

so, the keys youre gonna need to get at the dealer

the fob you can get off of ebay and program it for your car

I have the same problem where the dealer didn't have the spare key. Another example of safety nazis causing us headaches. PATS is stupid.

That's why this is the last modern car I'll have to endure before I graduate college, get a real job, and can buy a REAL car...say, a '56 Olds or a '51 Hudson Hornet.

Yes, you can get the keys cut at selected places, but not everyone cuts these keys.
Once you get the new blank cut, you can still get it programmed at some (very few) locksmiths. They will need a special machine to program the new key, and the locksmiths are usually a lot cheaper than getting it programmed at a dealer.

Here's an example: (prices are Canadian)
I called a dealer and the said $45 for the blank key and 1 hour of labour to program it, which their rate was $110. A total of $155.
I called a locksmith and he said $45 for the blank, and $40 to program with the machine. I told him I had a blank already, so he said $5 to cut it and $40 to program with the machine. (I bought 2 blanks from eBay)

Not to jack your thread but had a question also regaurding these Pats Keys..... Is there any way to key the European Laser cut keys..... the flip out ones.... made to work in our vehicles.... Not so much having them laser cut but just the standards etched out in the flip out fob..... your thoughts.

You can get the keys at streetkeys.com for a lot less than the dealership price, but he is correct that if you only have one key you will need to get them programmed at the dealership

You can also find the odd locksmith that will program keys cheaper than a dealership, so it's not like you only have one choice of places to go for programming. Call around and get some prices and find out if the locksmith can program them. Only a few locksmiths invest in the programming machines.

What does PATS have to do with the safety nazis?

PATS is an anti-theft technology which results in you paying lower insurance premiums (assuming you have theft coverage) vs. cars without PATS.
