Drive Axle Question.

I was driving along yesterday and started to get a knocking sound from what sounded like the front right of the car.

I stopped at a traffic light planning to limp home but when the lights changed I had no drive to the wheels. I pushed the car to the side of the road and got AAA to tow me home.

When the AAA guy lifted the front of the car a load of tranny fluid poured onto the floor.

When I got home I tried the car again and this time I had drive to wheels again. Although I didn't go anywhere.

I jacked the car up today for a look and noticed 2 things.

1. There was no drive axle bearing support bracket fitted and

2. It appeared the fluid had leaked out of the place where the drive axle fits into the tranny.

I wiggled and pulled the drive axle and I can withdraw it from the tranny about 2 inches.

This is obviously not right.

My question is: Does the drive axle bearing support bracket stop the axle from coming out of the tranny or is there something else that should be stopping me from just pulling the drive axle out?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Davva

Didn't you just have clutch and tranny work done and were having a bunch of other problems? No, you should not just be able to pull the driveshaft out of the tranny. If it's like every other car with an intermediate shaft, there should be a support bracket and a BEARING there, I believe.

Yes, I had the tranny replaced not long ago. And I do kinda think the bracket was not fitted when it should have been but I don't know for sure.

I have a bracket on order but I'm wondering if there is something else I need to do or just fit the bracket.

The drive axle bearing bracket will be here today and I'll be fitting it later.

I was looking at the Chilton manual and it mentions a retaining clip that goes on the left hand shaft. There is no mention of a clip on the right hand shaft so does that mean there isn't one on that side?

The clip is only on the driver side axle. The bracket on the passenger side should more or less hold that one in.
