205/45R17 vs 215/45R17 for 2007 ZX3 SES?

I have an '07 ZX3 SES on the way. I'll keep the stock 205/50R16 wheel/tire combo in the garage for Winters, but I'm upgrading to 2003 SVT 17x7 5-spoke wheels immediately. I used to have an '03 SVT and I'm a sick fan of that wheel.

However, I'm confused as to which tire to get for the wheel. Stock tire size for the SVT 17x7 is 215/45R17. I would like that--the width looks great from the rear vs 205. But I've already read one post here that said the 215/45R17s were "rubbing" on the ZX3. Not sure if that was due to lowering, though.

Also, Tirerack.com recommends 205 width instead of 215 for the ZX3 if running 17x7 wheels, and I'm curious now.

So the questions are:

Anyone here running 17x7s with 215/45R17 tires on a ZX3?

Any problems with a 215/45R17 tire and 17x7 wheel combo on a ZX3?

Any specifically about the '03 SVT 17x7 wheels that might cause a problem, such as different offset?

Any changes in '07 model line or SES suspension extras that would affect that?

Will lowering the ZX3 an inch or so cause any problems with a 215/45R17 wheel/tire combo?

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sincerely,

Beetle

I *think* that Svts come stock with 215 tires. Either way I just put 215/40/17's
on mine and there is really very little difference in width. I think you'll be fine either way. Maybe 215's will protect your rims a little more though.

Either will work just fine. There are more options and lower prices with the 215/45 size. We have the 215/45's on SVT Euro wheels and have had no problems. If I had it to do over again I'd would consider sticking with 16's and a lighter wheel to improve performance. The 17's and Ford wheels, while attractive, are too heavy.

I have a ZX4 lowered running 215-45-17 SVT 5 spokes. Although I think it was the 215-40 was like the exact same size of the stock rims meaning your spedo won't be off, I went with the 215-45 to get some extra beef on the sidewall. The SVT 5 spokes are not the sturdiest of wheels so I went with a hard sidewall, and actually keep them inflated at 35 psi instead of the 32 psi suggested for some extra protection. The stock continentals that came on the rims on the SVT stock were very soft and people would blow them out all the time. SO purely for precautionary methods, I went 215-45. Plus, your wheel gap is going to be ridiculously looking, so the bigger the better.

yes either way will be just fine; tirerack recommends the 205 because it's closer in diameter to the stock tires, thus not affecting the speedometer as much as the 215; but still with 215, the speedometer difference is negligeable...so no worries.

Thanks for all the responses guys! Just ordered new SVT 5-spokes and 4 new 215/45ZR17 tires this afternoon. First upgrade for when the new ride arrives.

Sincerely,

Beetle

You shouldn't see any problems. I run 205s on my ZX3 with a Eibach Sportline system with no rubbing at all. Should be good!

Problem with 205s is the constant breaking of the tire. I replaced SO MANY 205s when I had them that I got fed up and just went 215

Yeah no problem here running 215/45/17s on my ST200s with Sportline drop. It rubs only when I hit large bumps (which I avoid like the plague!)

1010 tires has an excellent tire size calculator which will show you the differences in tires sizes as compared to stock. It like it because it shows how it will effect the speedo.
