svt is acting up...less power? surging? help!

Alright i have been noticing my svt has been acting up a little lately. I have noticed in the past 1k miles or so it has done a little bit of surging at lower rpms- and the power just feels "different" just seems like sometimes all the power isnt there (kind of like how once your engine compartment gets hot in the summer and the power feels flat from heat soak on a SRI). I have been ignoring it for the most part until a few days ago. I put new 18x7.5 rims on with fresh 215/40/18 rubber and it just seems like the power is SERIOUSLY low! I know it could be a mental thing (thinking it is different) but I have put 30k of the 42k miles on my car so i know it pretty well. Now that the rims are on it seems like when i smash it in first gear from a slow roll (5mph or so) it just feels like its lacking torque and then throughout the entire rpm range it feels sluggish (like the rpms dont climb up nearly as fast as they used to). Could the weight difference between stock svt 5 spokes with brand new 215/45/17 fuzion HRI tires and my new setup really make a noticable difference? I know adding unsprung weight really kills power but I am just not sure if its something engine related or if the rims really did kill this much power!?!?

I need to clean my lug nuts up (were on the winter tire setup all winter so are kind of nasty) so i think i will weigh a stock rim/HRI and one new rim/tire to see what the weight difference is.

Anybody else have experience with this or have any idea as to what my problem could be?

One more thing to add...I have a tune from wayne installed that is now around 2 years old. Since his last tune I added a HFC and a SRI. I have also noticed occasionally cruising at like 2-3k rpm it will surge slightly (like it used to with his old tunes before he had given me the revamped ones). the thing is I have had the SRI and HFC on for 10k+ miles without a problem so I dont see how it could be acting up from those.

Thanks in advance for any help guys!

When's the last time you changed your fuel filter?

Red face

Good point Casey. However,it's a little suspicious that the hesitation started with the new tires.

You seems to experience the weird phenomena that i call "dead moments on launches".I got them few times already with my SVT.Some people says it's normal.I really don't know at this point. What i can tell you is when i had a Golf 02,it did the same "dead moment" and we sent it to the VW dealer. It was fine for a while but it came back.

IT's feel like the fuel is cut for one second on the launches.Irritating to say the least.

just a idear for ya... clean out your MAF sensor and see what happens. if nothing you may need to get a 3 step fuel treatment done... with they they clean out the throttle body real good and put an additive in the gas tank. 3 step is using an I.V type sytem to clean out the injecters and valves. they run a tube from an small tank and tap into a small vaccum line that leads to the intake manifold after the throttle body :o) my .02

Question

Blueoval,what is the MAF sensor?

One day i may end up asking them to try to repair this under warranty.

hmm all good input! I do need a new fuel filter which crossed my mind (hasnt been replaced since ford put one in her at birth!)
Another thing that has crossed my mind is my maf sensor could be dirty (K&N is oiled on my aem sri) so wonder if that could be adding to it.

I drove my car again today and now it seems to have about the same amount of power. The momentary dead spots you described sound exactly like my problem...i have noticed it a lot in the past few months and consistently when it is cold (will go to give it a decent amount of throttle and it feels like it falls flat on its face).

I really want a new tune but dont want to drop the 400ish on a predator right now (seeing as how ill get a whopping what 75 bucks out of my xcal1?) i think i might just wait till i can afford some sort of FI and do it then. or i could use the theory ill buy it now and then have it for when i DO get my FI! :)

After seeing the difference in dynos between tom and waynes tune it makes me want toms! Also for the fact he could tune for my intake (probably soon to be a k&n drop in) and my HFC as well as actually get rid of the damn TC which wayne never was able to do on mine :(

the part that comes before the throttle body... it makes sure theres enough air coming in .. thats one way to put it!

as far as cleaning the MAF.. would a can of compressed air be fine? I am getting the same thing with NO changes to the car. I was assuming it was the fuel filter.

I am noticing (begin over analytical mode) the surge feeling is between 2K - 3K in the upper (3 and up) gears. It doesn't feel as punchy as it once did even above these ranges. It doesn't feel like its the engine as the note really never changes but I can just feel a slight surge when sitting perfectly still

I think mine is the fuel filter as its 47K on the same one (not sure when that was supposed to be changed), but suggestions are more than welcomed.

i think the fuel filter might be the problem... I know it was supposed to be done (or at least advised by ford) with the 30k mile maintenance.
