Key Lock Issue

I just started having a really weird issue with the 04 SVT. I drove to work fine, come back to the car in the afternoon to leave and the key wont turn in the lock. It's like it's the wrong key for the car!

Ford wanted to take the key lock cylinder (probably butchering the part name) out and then get keys recut (at the tune of $400 for the removal and then $120 per key).

If I put my key in and band on the end (the part you hold so that it's banged directly into the ignition then the key will turn in the ingnition and start the car. This happens anytime the key is removed. Just started yesterday and I am leaning more towards it just being a key issue (I think my wallet is leaning towards that as well) . Feedback is welcome as I don't trust a single Ford Dealership in my area.. so I might need to take this info to a third part.

Oh .. and I just had to throw this in as it was topical and an absurdly stupid way to end my post --->

Thanks for the help

Unfortunately if you do a search you will see that this is a common problem with the focus. Here is what you can do:

1. PM b16sir1991 (Mike). He works for a Ford dealership and can get you the newer, revised key cylinder and will build it to match your keys for $65, I believe.

2. Since you are still able to turn the cylinder with your keys, you should be able to follow these instructions and replace the key cylinder yourself. http://www.mbremerart.com/misc/Focus...20Cylinder.htm

Best to do it now before you can no longer turn the cylinder with the key because then you will have to drill out the cylinder in order to remove it.

I really appreciate the help. I didn't know the proper words to look for, so my searches came up too broad or off base.

Thanks again for the tip. The swap out seems reasonable, I just need the part.

Tbones, thanks for posting the fix (possibly again), you're a gentleman and a mechanic!

Lockskmith

My wife's 2000 Focus wagon had a problem with the ignition switch. The key would not go in further than 1/2". A spring in one of the gates broke so it was blocking the keyway. 2 sided keys use what's called a gate for each notch in the key. She called a travelling locksmith and had a new lock cylinder put in for about $130.00. He had to drill out the old one and make the lock cylinder match the old keys.

Jbondjr, do you have a spare key?
Does the problem still happen with another key or just that particular key?
If it's just the one key, then there's no need to replace the lock cylinder. Could just be a worn key.

I'm surprised that you didn't find anything if you searched for "lock cylinder."

Anyway, I found this in the How to section. Might help.

btw:
The dealer is full of crap.
They don't need to cut new locks with new matching keys.
They can replace your IC and configure the IC to your current key using your VIN.

This would mean they would have to replace all the locks on your car.

Yeah, I replaced mine before I even noticed a problem. b16sir1991 helped me with a new lock cyl also :)

It's cheaper to do it now, while you can still get the key out..
