P.Steering fluid color

What color is the stock power steering fluid in a 03 zetec supposed to be? I noticed mine was just under the MIN mark, so I looked it the manual, and it recommend motorcraft stuff (like they do with everything else) But I can't find motorcraft stuff anywere around here. So I got some STP stuff from auto zone. Well I looked in the resivior and the fluid that was in there was a dark brownish, and the stp that I put in was clear. I don't think the car even has 30k miles yet, when are you supposed to change this stuff? And let's say I was to do it, how would I go about doing it and what fluid would I use? I've never messed with PS fluid or the system before. Any info would be good.

It does get dark over time. It starts life clear, so you can go ahead and use it. You do not want to let it run out. Heat issues and metal chips follow. That means big $$$. I am not sure if there is a serivice interval on that. You can check here.

^^dito it is clear I don't think being a different brand will hurt much at least on mine it did'nt I even think I used the same stuff you did the STP which is a alright brand in my opinion. Has for it being brown how brown if it looks real dirty you might want to consider changing it completly though I would'nt know how you would go about doing that.

If I remember correctly the fluid should last 100k. I thought I read that on FJ.com and could be completely wrong. I usually swap the fluid out of the reservior every oil change with the top of a squirt bottle. And it always looks the same dirty brown color. I've been using the Valvoline synthetic fluid with no problems.

Not sure about the 2003 models, but the 2005 and most other Fords I have worked on recommend ATF, not Power Steering Fluid, for the power steering.
