ATX - 1st and Rev only. Replace or repair?

Among the reasons I acquired my '00 ZX3 so cheap (the main reason, really) was due to a bad transmission. Fixed the ignition cylinder and programming issues.

If it helps at all, she is a DOHC w. trans code XS4P-DF.

The thread title explains all. Only moves in Rev. and/or will not shift past 1st. Prior to selling her, the original owner (as well as a mechanic) thought a new speed sensor would solve the problem. It did temporarily, long enough to go down the block then once again, nothing past 1st gear. From what I recall, the mechanic scanned it, and a code for "internal trans. problem" or something similar came up.

From what I've read, the trans shifts are actuated by solenoids. Two rather inexpensive, and three close to $100 each. Is the situation able to be solved by replacing a solenoid or two, rather than the entire trans? I don't want to seem cheap, but changing out a solenoid would be nice from both a cost and labor standpoint.

Any thoughts?

It depends on if you have to tear down the trans or just drop the pan to replace them also do you know what you are doing if you do the labor yourself? Almost sounds like the mechanic could of scamed you. How much did you pay? for the car? Just curious cause it still might be worth it. If you plan on modding it you should upgrade while you have it out of the car if you have too. Or get a whole new tranny like one from Lentech they make some beefed up trannys for about the price of a rebuild if you need one it might be easier.

They're mounted in the valve body. Drop the pan to access it. Found an article online w. some photos.

The mechanic is a stand up guy. He just isn't good at troubleshooting transmission problems, I guess.

Besides, I knew the trans was bad before I bought it. Was part of the reason I got a deal on the car. Previous owner drew the line at paying someone to install a transmission. On the other hand, I can do it myself. Was wondering if there's a work around that doesn't involve pulling the entire trans though.

Don't have the money to start building her up yet, just enough to get a transmission and some misc. parts. Basically, I'm looking to get her moving and tuned up for now.

well you should be able to just drop the pan and the vavle body it will be very messy. But I would get i dianosged by a tranny speacialist cause it could be a more severe problem. take it to a few different places. I would'nt trust just one place. they might try to rip you off. I have tranny guys has friends so I don't to worry about that problem. but thats how they get cars alot of people don't fix em' and just sell em' cheap they scoop them up fix em' for almost nothing cause they do the labor and Bam turn around and make a profit. Good luck keep us updated.
