ZETEC & DURATEC wut's the difference?

I don't know if this question is worth making a new thread for, but I was just wondering and I wanted to get quick responses since I'm super-new to this Focus scene. What's the big difference between the ZETEC motor and the DURATEC motor? does the DURATEC motor have variable valve timing? what does VVT do exactly?

The Duratec in the Focus does not have any VVT/VCT of any sorts. The Duratec in the Mazdas (aka the MZR), the Fusion, and other cars, has VCT on the intake cam. It adjusts the timing of the intake cam to optimize lowend torque, like a SVT.

The biggest differences between the Zetec and Duratec are: Zetec is an iron block, Duratec is aluminum. Belt driven non-interference cams on the Zetec, chain driven interference cams on the Duratec. Exhaust is on the front of the Zetec, while its in the back on the Duratec. Duratec heads (especially the 2.3l) flow far better than a Zetec.

I always thought that the zetec was an interference engine like 95% of the dohc 16v motors out there. The only non interference motors I've come across have been 8v sohc motors (volvo b230f/ft red block motor for example)

What's the difference in hp between a zetec and duratec, and difference in potential of the motor with mods?

Zetec = 130hp
Duratec 2.0l = 136hp
Duratec 2.3l = 145-151hp
SVT Zetec = 170hp

Potential power from each motor really is going to vary on how much modification and tuning someone potentially does to the car. But mod for mod, the Duratec has seen better gains.

One more question: why american SVT is called zetec and european ST170 duratec while they both use the same engine?

Not really sure; its mostly speculation, but I think it has to do with marketing just to get the name out there.
