Some interesting video game products from the past

The most popular video game consoles haven't changed all that much over the past 20 years. The PS3, PS2, Xbox/360, SNES, NES, Sega Genesis etc all display graphics of varying quality on a TV and the on screen action is manipulated by some sort of a controller. Likewise, all of the handheld consoles are very similar. Here's a few think-outside-the-box products that I remember from when I was a kid (I had a friend whose parents bought him all this cool crap hehe).

1. Nintendo Super Scope
wiki article

Basically a gigantic bazooka controller for the super nintendo. Best part was using the scope to take aim at things, it really made shoot 'em up games a lot more involved. I didn't use this one very much, but I definitely remember blasting little green aliens as they stuck their heads out of moon craters hehe.

2. Nintendo Virtual Boywiki article

A set of 3D goggles that you looked directly into. Probably the only "true" 3D console that was avaliable for household gaming. Many thought it was the future of gaming, but terrible final product quality (it was rushed out so Nintendo could focus on the 64) made it a total flop.

3. Sega Nomadwiki article

I'd would say this is the best portable console EVER MADE! It was a fully functional, completely portable Sega Genesis. Like a Gameboy, it had a LCD screen and built-in controller. However, the Nomad could also be connected to a TV and played just like a regular Genesis. A second controller could even be added for multiplayer gaming. The best part was that it could play any Sega Genesis game. I had one of these as a kid, and me and my brother had tons of fun playing with it, both at home and on long trips.

The Nomad came out at a terrible time though. It was released around the same time that the "next generation" consoles (N64) were coming out, and it costs nearly as much. Sega also stopped making Genesis games shortly after it was released.

I've had all three of those, and LOVED them. I used to leave the power switch on the Super Scope all the time, and would always need new AA's when I wanted to play. I really wish I wouldn't have sold my Nomad and Virtual Boy though. Mario's Tennis & Comix Zone FTW.

Anybody remember the Sega Activator for the Genesis? I never had one but always wanted it.

Of course. The cartridges went where the red bar is in that picture.

The cartridges themselves were just bootleg chips and the LCD graphics that don't move, like Game&Watch.

Don't forget R.O.B.

Even when I was a kid back in the Nintendo days, I knew that it would be a flop.
