Anyone road racing the duratec 2.3 out there

Any one racing the 2.3 Duratec Cosworth engine 250 HP.

How about one naturally aspirated between 250-280 HP range, this
is the range that World Challenge Touring is allowing the cars to run
with. Rules say OE: pistons, rods, and crank. Stock ratio on the
rocker arms. Intake and exhaust ports max port 25.4 mm measured down
from the center of port opening. Valve guide may be machined as port
of the porting.

If I had a 2.3 Duratec within 250-280 HP range I would consider doing
it.

Regards,
John Hsu

it will never happen with these motors. turboed they get to like 210-220 whp. full cossie set up well get them to 230 but they dont have stage 3 out yet so no chance of you getting to 250-280 with OE internals

OE pistons, rods, and crank will really limit you. You'll be lucky to get 200 whp N/A without changing those. The 250hp Cosworth engine even chages those, so I don't see how that would be legal for WC.

Plus, I haven't seen anyone with a Cosworth built engine in a Focus on here. Big bucks.

Yes, and what is the spec list on those engines? He states that for WC, you must run OEM pistons, rods, and crank. Those Cosworth built engines for the Atlantic series I doubt use those OEM parts.

Cool, did not know they used a Duratec in the Forumla Atlantic series thats very interesting. The Cosworth with 250 Hp is $12,500 without the ECU, I'm guessing a Formula Atlantic motor is over $20,000.

AS for the OEM stuff it can be lightened, shot pinned for additional strength, and modifying the top of the pistons, question is how much Horse Power and abuse can the OEM handle, I would like it to be a 40-60 hour race motor. WC rules also state that it can't rev over 8500 RPM. Motor can have a 3 stage dry sump one pressure and two scavange. If the Formula Atlantic motor's head is within the specs of WC it would be interesting to see how much HP it would be. WC uses Sunoco race gas I don't know what octane level it is.

The 2.0 Zytec motor I have in it now supposedly puts out 200 HP at the crank from what the previous owner had said. I'm going to dyno it, also
using a Motec M4 ECU, aluminum flywheel, LS1 coils, aluminum pullys, cold
air intake, barrel style intake manifold, headers, straight exhaust pipe, and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Will the headers, intake manifold, flywheel,
bolt on to a 2.3 Duratec? Anyone using a Mountune Duratec motor, could
be another option.

Regards,
John H.

Assuming this is in a Focus, no, a Zetec header, intake manifold, and flywheel will not bolt to a Duratec. However, Cosworth makes a really nice header and roller thottle assembly.

The weakest part of the engine is reportablely the rods. And some engine builders recommend not taking the stock crankshaft past 7500 RPM.

Talk to Walter Marcy at Marcy Motorsports. He's built a fair amount of high HP engines, and know where some of the speed bumps are.

I find it interesting that they let you do a lot of exotic tuning, but limit you to OEM pistons, rods, and crank. Do you have a link to the rules?

I would call/e-mail Leo Capaldi with any questions. He still has his world challenge car. I can't imagine anything being OEM (maybe dimensions) with the motor's costing north of 20k.

As far as streetable real world stuff goes marcy motorsport has some pretty wild stuff.

He currently holds the duratec na focus record at 221whp and will be shattering that in the next few months.
