car wont start but turns over

tonight i was delivering pizza...as i pull up to a house my car shuts off and rolls in the drive way. at first i thought i stalled ( you know how sometimes you stall when going slow) and just rolled to a stop. i didnt think much of it till i got back in my car and tried to start it. the headlights, inside lights, dome light, cluster lights all work. yesterday when i started my car the dome light would dim a little. but tonight after it died it acts like its going to start but doesnt. it cranks and wants to start but just makes noise like its going to as long as i have the key turned. anyone know what this is? it would help a lot. i check all the spark plug wires and they are fine. batterey connections clean and fine. this is one of many problems i have had with this "lemmon" car. if you have seen my other post you will know i got the bad car out of the bunch :(. please help me...

if the dome light dimmed, I would say its a bad battery. Try going to Advance auto parts and have them give you a battery test. otherwise, it might be that your starter is bad. or might be the alternator, which isn't properly charging the battery hence that's why you have trouble starting.

So
1) Battery
2) Bad starter
3) Bad alternator

hmmm...i'm no mechanic, but if you replaced the starter, then you eliminate that from the list of bad parts. i'll find you a similar thread where a guy solved a problem almost like this...

http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=21767

Also, few tips. I always do this and it helps me.
When starting the car, turn off all the bells and whistles (radio, lights etc). Don't even step on the brake while your car is off. If you drive manual, pull the handbrake and step on clutch instead of stepping the brake. stop lights come on and they will eventually drain your battery. If you drive automatic, you don't have to push the brake to start the car. I see a lot of this with people. When they get into their car, the first thing that comes on is their stop lights and then their car starts. Do this every day 100 times and your battery will feel good ass spanking. Especially if your alternator doesn't charge properly. On second thought, alternator's don't have the "time" to charge our batteries anymore these days. Its always "Start the engine, drive 5 miles, turn the engine off. Go deposit check at your bank, start the engine, go buy dental floss, start the engine again..." <<<repeat about 40-50 times a day. I believe that a good battery charging needs more driving and less shutting+starting, because it's hard to crank four pistons to the point that they produce compression and sparks.

so anyway...sorry for a little longer post...

I would yank that alternator, take it in and get it checked out. Auto Zone can do this I think. How many miles are on the car? Do you have an aftermarket audio system?

other possible causes:
Bad Ground somewhere- good luck
Crank sensor-
bad ignition coils- unlikely
timing belt worn or broken- 2nd place to check i would say!

Good luck w/ it~
