Make: Sony
Model: CDX-GT45UIW
Cost: $130 at Wal-Mart

Decent sound, OK programmable EQ, not too bright. Actually gave me the idea for my interior "theme" using lights to match the color of the faceplate lights...

Make: Alpine
Model: MDA-W910J
Cost: $450 (2004 unit bought at AudioCubes)
Overall rating: 10

I bought this unit back in '04 from Japan because it was a dual DIN with MiniDisc. I've used MD since day one and still use it to this day. Really, a great format that fell between the cracks of technology. I just recently added an Alpine KCA-121B adaptor to use the CD changer input as a line in for my portable MP3 player.

The unit only has one set of pre-amp outs that is used to run the stock sub on my SVTFocus. I also like the 2 way x-over and time correction. Once all was fine tuned the unit sounds great...and that's with all stock speakers.

Thanks to the great threads on how to connect the stock 9006 audiophile sub to aftermarket head units, I was finally able to install my head unit.

Its a great headunit all in all, sounds great, looks great, easy to use, moderatly easy to install.. i only dock two points because:

1. Its designed around ipod functionality, so media stored on SD cards and USB drives dont get access to the many features the ipod does. Im not a huge fan of Ipods for many reasons, so i lose out on a lot of nifty functionality because i dont have one. For most people, this isnt a problem, but penalizing people for not using an ipod is silly to me.

2. It doesn't have Bluetooth installed. You'd figure for the amount i paid, it would have bluetooth, it probably cost them as much to build in the adapter that allows you to install bluetooth as it would to just install the damn bluetooth. Instead of charging another 120 for an adapter that has horrid reviews.

3. Its usb support is very limited; only USB thumb drives, and ipods. no external hard drives, no other mp3 players, nada.

4. no adjustable dimming. It has two settings, bright, and when you turn on your lights, it goes dim. You cant adjust either of them, and using the dimmer on your headlight switch doesn't affect it. Its not that bad, but somewhat annoying.

Came looking brand new and honestly I wouldnt be able to tell if it hadnt said that it was refurbished. everything works except the ipod plug in. disappointed but the aux works great so I use that. Main Screens are a bit cheesy. If one wanted to bypass the brake, its very easy because its just a ground so you can connect it to the decks ground and it would work if one were to try this I didnt of course. But with the minor things aside, I have been very pleased especially for what I paid.

Here's a quick vid of the "color flow" display setting.

Front USB and aux inputs. iPod control through the head unit. Bluetooth audio streaming and hands free calling through the car's sound system with optional bluetooth adapter via rear aux input. HD radio. Automatic station presetting, the head unit scans your area for the 18 strongest radio signals and automatically stores them. "Tag" songs on HD stations and purchase on iTunes right through your device.

Only thing I have a gripe with is navigating through my iTunes library on my iPhone thorough the head unit. It's set up with numbers instead of letters so finding a specific artist or song title is a little difficult.
