Lost 5th and 6th gear (getrag)

I just put a new clutch in my car and 1st to 4th is perfect but 5th is 3rd and 6th is 4th. The only thing I can think of causing this is there is a bracket under the hood that holds 2 plastic pieces with springs inside it on the shifter linkage. I broke one of these when removing it so the spring just sits there. I assumed the spring was only there to hold the boot in place, could this be my problem and if so how can I fix this?

Further research...I believe what I read is that this spring holds a nut so that it doesn't back off...if I check it out tomorrow and tighten down the nut and lock tite it down, would that fix my problem?
