Duratec 2.3 failures?
I'm looking into buying a 05/07 ST and keep seeing threads about the 2.3's with spun rod bearings or other knocking/rebuild issues. It's scaring the poop out of me. Are these issues as widespread as they seem? Are they owner neglect issues? It's the same 2.3 that's in an 04 Mazda3 right?

The only widespread issues are the tumble flaps. These make sounds like valves, but upon closer inspection by listening to the valve cover using a probe or stethoscope- the sound is not in the valves. The sound comes from the intake manifold. This will not be a problem in vehicles with aftermarket intake manifolds.

The 2.3L is a great little engine. I never had a lick of problems with mine.
