Hi guys new here and have a question . Looking to put a svt focus engine in my zx2 , I wanna delete the vct and was wondering about the idle afterwards . Is it choppy as in ruff (cammed sound) or normal ? Thanks Tom

EMS 8860, fail.

Best of luck, just don't expect much. The stock ECU can handle much more that you think, and there's far more help available.
There, I fixed it for you.... Megasquirt runs VCT just fine, been running it for 2 + years

SVT tuned properly makes 145-150 to the wheels so lets say 147 , take off the SVT header that wont fit in the zx2 and you are about 135 hp to the wheels , loose the duel runner intake and you kill the lower end to about 4500 rpm

Take the zx2 engine and shave the head or add a Focus head shaved, add comp stg 2 or 3 cams , adj cam gears , good header and intake and be at about 150hp to the wheels with the stock bottom end

Not a lot in the grand scheme. Had some fun and learned a few things and got to embarass a few k20 civics with my all motor, gutted out escort.

OBX SVT Header ~200 shipped (new)
DSIM ~ 200 shipped (used) (included TB, TPS, Fuel Rail...etc etc.)
MSD Adjustable window switch ~ 150
A Saturday afternoon of my time and a case of beer.

Worth it, probably not.

Works great, just need to configure the block's resonance frequency and set the knock threshold. It then pulls a set amount of timing per knock event, and once knock is abated, it slowly reintroduces timing up to the point where it detects knock again, then backs off and stays there. It will flash the MIL if it detects knock as well.

As far as logging goes, it logs to an onboard SD card (I use a 32GB card) and with that I can play back the entire drive session, see each knock event and the corresponding engine conditions, and what the actual spark timing is vs what the ignition map wants it to be. I can also overlay the fuel and spark maps in live playback of the logs to see where it is in reference to those tables.

There is soooooo many things you cannot do with the ms that can be done faster and better with the stock ECU as well as easier and quicker

By what your saying you havent got the blocks resonance yet and it will take you days to weeks to properly set it and to get it to work at each rpm because it changes at times at 100rpm and times at 500 rpm per rpm cycle per load , it would take weeks on a dyno to properly map it and get it to where the stock ECU is

You can blow smoke up others dresses but I have worked with over 25 diff software and feel the MS is in the lower percentile of standalone software , they nickle and dime you to death and have little to no support

Out of curiosity, what's a better ECU solution that someone can DIY install and tune in their garage for under $1000? I honestly don't know what else is out there right now.

You do realize that both the OP and myself are referring to the factory ZX2 computer, which is at least 2 generations older than the Focus computer. It has hardware IO and memory limitations. It also would never be capable of coil on plug ignition, flex fuel, boost control, flat shift, traction control, or launch control. MS supports all of these. You can sit on your high horse and call me an idiot for doing this the way I did, but the fact of the matter is that it is my vehicle, my choice on how to implement it, and I have a 100% working EFI solution using what parts I have and elected to use. Could I have used something more expensive, you bet, but I did it this way because I have a lot of experience with megasquirt, since the MS1 days. I am an active member of the development team, and when you say their support is non-existent, you sir are misinformed.

I am not misinformed I an talking about calling in for support and not getting it , first hand experience working with customers sitting on my in house dyno jet dyno

Yes I have tuned dozens of NA and boosted ZX2 and had no issues , the ZX2 like the ZX3 will do coil on plug , tune for flex fuel , as well as do a 2-step ,

Your right its your choice , your money and you can do what you choose when you choose doesnt change the fact that ms is second rate to the stock ECU in the hands of some on that knows how to properly use it

Please inform me how a computer with 2 coil driver circuits can run 4 independent ignition coils. How it can read a 12 volt pwm signal when it does not have a circuit available. How it then can take this signal and use it to determine the alcohol percentage in the fuel supply.

I have done a lot of the VCT Delete , I was the first to make them , there are 2 sets of SVT cams , one set idles good and one set idles loppy , there is no markings on the cam to say which is which , all I know is some do the loppy and some do not , when you do the VCT delete you will need dyno time and the intake cam has a built in advance so you will have to properly set the adj cam gears or on the dyno you will use up all the adjustment and have the move the adj cam gear further to be able to adjust to where you need it for best performance

Good looking car by the way , yes the ZX2 ECU has the ability for 2-step

I cannot answer that , there wasnt anything year related , no numbers on cams that showed a difference I could never put my finger on why some did and some didnt other then there had to be 2 diff cams out

I even removed a loppy set and installed them in a SVT that wasnt loppy and they were loppy
