I meant thats where the valve hits piston with the valve closed.

If belt length is an issue you could try a shorter belt from another vehicle.

You can figure out a belt length with the following information

Belt Pitch =
Small Pulley (crank) Tooth count =
Large Pulley (cam) Tooth count =
Pulley Centers =

Belt pitch = Center to center measurement between the teeth.
Pulley centers = the center to center measurement between the center of the crank pulley and center of the cam pulleys.

Piston to valve contact would be a bigger concern. What compression do you want to achieve?

Just taking 0.02" should net you approx 10:1. If you take 0.02" off the head and the block both for a total 0.04" and you would hit a static CR of 10.5:1. My math could be of a little bit.

Pretty sure you need to have the stock tooth count to keep it in time.

That being said you would have to remove 0.25" - 0.375" in belt length in order to require a tooth count change. Depending on tooth pitch.....

I just went through all this on a SOHC VTEC head swap on an Accord. SOHC Non VTEC used a 113 tooth count, while the shorter cam height VTEC head required a 112 tooth count belt. They use the exact same tooth count cam and crank pulleys. Only difference is the center to center measurement of the two gears. The VTEC blt was 0.375" shorter and therefore they removed a tooth, due to the tooth pitch being 0.375. If they didn't shorten the blt by a tooth the belt wouldn't tension properly.

Belt tooth count means nothing, belt just speeds up or slows down, maybe it doesn't repeat teeth anymore like it did before. You're translating two teeth at crank for every one tooth at cam. Only thing you could do there was add or subtract a single belt tooth. Past that you're out of the ballpark. Belt only carries the motion in exact amounts, meaning individual tooth spacing not number of teeth. Actual ratio is the difference in upper and lower pulley sizes. You can use 70 inch or 70 foot belt and same ratio there.

Momma, that's close. However, the valves still in essence move sideways as they get closer to piston, either closed or open. They have to since they are not straight up and parallel to the cut effect, or dead straight up and down.
