255/40/17 too much for 17x8s on a mk1?

im going to buy some 17x8in wheels in the next few months to run on my monster and i need wide tires on the ground for traction. the wheels are 43mm offset and i want to run as wide a tire on them as i can and still not have too terrible much fender rub and no strut rub either. think a 255 would fit? or should i stay with a 245? for that matter could i cram a 245 or 255 tire on a svt rim? 17x7? the width of the wheel is indeed important because you can fit a wider tire on a wider wheel but im limited by what i can fit in the fenders without rubbing too much on either side so if i can max out that space on a 17x7 then why bother moving up to a 17x8?

I'd go 245 on 17x8 that way the tire is more flush on the wheel and makes for a better contact patch

255 is going to be too much. its too wide and too tall.
245 is still going to be tricky. your fitment will have to be perfect.

well here is my thought. i dont see why i couldnt run a pretty beefy tire on a 17x7 like a svt wheel. i have run 225/50/15 drag radials on 15x6 inch wheels (stock 15s) and that was good for right at a 7.25in contact patch with the pavement. i was concerned about having such a wide tire on such a narrow rim so i inked the tire, rolled it across some paper and it worked out quite well. so why could i not do something similar with 17s? i may end up running DRs on the front anyway even for driving around town even though i would prefer regular street tires.

while a 245 would sit nice and flush on a 8in wide rim you can run a pretty good bit wider tire than the width of the rim before you start rounding out the contact patch. on a 6in rim you can get a tire to make a 7.25in contact patch.

and 255 is the WIDTH of the tire. the second digit pertains to the height. more than anything i was hoping someone would chime in who has already done this so they could just GIVE me the answer instead of making me figure it out for myself but i guess ill have to break out the old tape measure and do it myself. all i want to know is what is the widest i could fit between the fender and shock with minimal rub on the fender and i can calculate the offset based on that. sooo i guess im figuring it out for myself then unless someone has some other input...
