I'm currently working on getting Tom's Turbo Kit and was wondering if there is a good "How To" for installing a turbo onto a SVT. I found this link and it looks pretty good to follow to me. I do understand my parts will not be routed exactly like this as well.
I could not find anything in the "How To Archives". Understand there might not be simply because there are likely no two complete kits alike. I have never worked on a car with a turbo or installed one myself.
I was wondering if there is anything I should know other than just simply bolting everything together. An example being how do I know I'm getting oil to the turbo properly, etc. Just making sure i don't destroy the new turbo or engine the first time i start up the car with the parts installed. . I am not a seasoned mechanic, but feel with a decent set of instructions can fix/install most items.
Also would this be a day or less installation? I'm going to go to a DIY garage with a lift and all tools i could need.
I'm not going to make any specific comments, just suggest that the idea of trying to do it in a day at a DIY garage is a potential "recipe for disaster".
It's an involved task where you're likely to run into stumbling blocks & possibly need more tools/parts before you're done.
Then when completed, it's time to get it running on a base tune & probably datalog & re-tune before the first test runs on the street to continue refining the tuning/checking the operation.
Anytime you're under time pressure the likelihood of errors/issues increases dramatically, more so on a first time project than something simple that's been done before.
Multiple partial days is a better plan, but once you get deep into it the car is just a "roller" until complete. IIRC most plan a week to be without the car as a minimum.

I had a feeling that might be the case. I don't really have any choices at this time. It's my only vehicle and I don't have a garage. The only good thing is i live walking distance to work. So I don't need it, but every day I leave it at the DIY garage it's $200 a day. So definitely incentive to get it done as fast as possible. But thanks, that is good advice on trying to work on it slowly over a longer period of time. Haha need to make some friends.
Might do the intercooler & most piping one weekend, and look at/loosen & retighten some of the other critical pieces to check for issues - then do the rest another weekend.
Thanks focusmaniaczx3 and sailor, that is a great point i didn't think of by installing everything I can before the point of no return basically. Can you get a good idea of where to install the intercooler without the turbo and turbo manifold installed already then? If it was anything like the link in my first post, http://www.turbozx3.com/howto/turbokit.htm it looks like you have to drill holes in the car to bolt the intercoloer too, which if i imagine if that is the case you have to have everything lined up pretty accurately, right?
And thanks for the information on the egr block, what does that do exactly? Going to google it now.
focusmaniaczx3 has the experience doing this, I'm just figuring that pulling the bumper & getting the intercooler/plumbing in place is where you'd be doing the most "fiddling' with the fitment that can get time consuming.
I am sorry I have not answered earlier but just been covered up , the piping you have may not be like the one you have pictured in the link which hasent been built sense 2002
If you can take a picture of the piping I can tell you if you have the old style or new style piping and I will be glad to help whe install time comes as long as I m back from FF14
Hi Tom, if the piping is referring to the intercooler/turbo/inake piping on the turbo kit, it will is going to be your latest kit. I started this thread wondering if anyone had a link of installing a turbo kit step by step with pictures, just because it is going to be my first time installing a turbo, and the "how to" posted by people on FF are always incredibly helpful to look at while i'm installing anything for the first time.
