I bent my passenger-side tie rod into a nice arc after hitting a curb. I read the suggestions about grinding flats onto the inner tie rod end, and about welding the ball to the socket. I also tried using a pipe wrench, but I have no clue how others could have maneuvered a pipe wrench onto the inner tie rod end with everything else that was in the way.

Then I ran across these tools (they're all the same tool, even though they have different part #s and are from different vendors):
* AutoZone #25296
* Advanced Auto #946
* NAPA #SER946

This tool looks like an exhaust U-clamp, but beefier and with serrated edges around the inside of the "U", and a square hole to insert a 3/8" drive extension to a ratchet.

To use it, you simply tighten the clamp around the end of the inner tie rod (no flats required), insert a 3/8" extension, attach a ratchet to the other end of the extension, twist, and off it comes. No grinding, no welding, no pipe wrenches! The tool even grips well enough to torque the new inner tie rod into place.

All this, and the tool costs ~$15 - $20, and was stocked at my local store.

When I saw this tool online, I had my doubts about how well it could possibly grip a perfectly round inner tie rod end with no flats, but I was very pleasantly surprised. In fact, I was impressed enough to tackle the tie rod on the driver's side as well, which was a bit worn, but not bent like the passenger side was.

If you're replacing inner tie rods on your Focus, get this tool!

Looks and sounds like a winner!!!!! I hope the local NAPA has it in stock, it will make removal, and possibly installing, a lot easier.................

I'm surprised no one has thought of this, but I just use a basin wrench from harbor freight, about $10. It is made from square tubing, so you can put a crescent wrench on it. It can be a little tricky to get it to grip, but once you do it comes off fairly easily. The basin wrench is extendable also, so you don't have to have the tie rod extended, which will reduce your risk of damage.

I could never get enough torque with a pipe wrench to get it loose.

I have a question on the inner tie rod removal. I acquired the clamp-on tool and am planning on doing the replacement once time allows. My question is about the force I will be placing on the rack during the removal and replacement. Do I need to be concerned that the 59 ft/lbs of torque on the replacement will damage seals or the rack and the removal may even require more force. Is it necessary to hold the rack while removing or replacing? Thank you for your time.
