hey, just wondering if anyone knows the weight of the recommended getrag gear oil....it's not on the synthetic gear oil i got from ford...thanks!!

Your best off just going with the Ford Full Synthetic that Ford calls for

That's all I run in my SVTF (change it annually) and it's all I ran in my SVTC that I owned for 4 years with no troubles what so ever.

Amsoil Synthetic MTF is great fluid as well.

[???:)] I have no idea where you got that info. but I'd really like to read it. I'm not pointing a finger at you but I would severely admonish and never believe whoever told you that.

Merc. V full synthetic is GL-4 gear rated hydraulic fluid. It doesn't even come close to motor oil. It's less viscous than straight 5 weight machine oil.

Merc V (synthetic)
Vis @ 100°C, cSt 7.5
Vis @ 40°C, cSt 34
Viscosity Index 198
Pour Point, °C -60
Pour Point, °F -76
Flash Point, °C 225
Flash Point, °F 437
Brookfield Vis @ -40°C, P 52

10W-40 (synthetic)
Viscosity Grade SAE 10W40
Vis @ 100°C, cSt 14.6
Vis @ 40°C, cSt 93
Viscosity Index 164
CCS Viscosity, Poise, @*C 65@-25
Pour Point, °C -45
Pour Point, °F n/a
Flash Point, °C 248
Flash Point, °F 478
NOACK Evaporation Loss,1hr @ 482°F (250°C), % 6
HTHS Vis, cP @150°C, ASTM D4741 4.7

"API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example, many modern gearboxes use a 75W90 gear oil, which is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil."

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gear_oil

Several instances around this forum, people use a specifically designed oil from Europe in the getrag, with the 5w and 10w40 euro spec oil (which is for motorcycles) which is used in both the engine AND transmission. Since mines a DD, I use the ford honey.

Both from Amsoil

cSt - Centi-stroke has nothing to do with API's own version of oil 'weight.' cSt is a standardized measurement regardless of the fluid being measured or what organization does the measuring.
