heater issues 2000 ZTS

I have a 2000 ford focus ZTS and am wondering why my heater wont blow hot ever.. My gauge reads half within a couple miles of my house at the latest. If I let it idle to long it will over heat so I know the car itself is getting warm. But no matter what setting I put the heater on it just isn't hot. It's warm if I put it on top vents only with fan speed on four and temp all the way hot..

Other issue I am having is gas mileage. I can't get better then low 20's. Car runs good drives decent needs motor mounts other then that perfectly ok.

Have you checked the engine coolant level recently? There are a lot of things that can prevent a heater from working correctly, but if I were having issues with over heating and the heater was not able to blow hot air I would start with the issues with the cars cooling system (ie, low coolant, system leaking, bad water pump, rust/debris clogging heater core or radiator etc).

If the coolant levels are OK, check this link for other ideas.

The "blend door" controls the mix of cool & warm air entering the cabin, heater core is always hot given adequate coolant flow - only air flow path changes when turning the temp. knob.

yes coolant level is perfect. And I know for a fact it flows so the waterpump is working. Car heats up to middle of gauge and stops so thermostat is working as well. Thats what left me stumped. No antifreeze on the passenger floorboard so im assuming the heatercore is good.

Now this flap where is it located and what do i do to fix/replace it?

If coolant is fine, why the over heating at idle? Has me curious if air not trapped in motor.

I would say you are low on coolant or the water pump impellers are worn out. I would 1st follow the procedure on how to fill the cooling system. It is not as easy as filling the reservoir. The system may have a bunch of air locks. Next pressure test the system and you may find a bunch of small leaks

In middle of summer it would overheat any time it idled or going up long hills. that is the only time. winter it never overheats unless its idleing after a long drive and left to idle for 20+min it will start to heat up again.

I traded my durango for it just trying to get it into decent condition.

I have a switch setup to kick on the fans (stops the overheating) cause some times they wont kick on at idle.

Easiest to look through the posts to that "sticky" I gave a link to (it's at the top of this page, as another way to find it). Posts there, and links included, give a good rundown on variations of the problem & different fixes.
