NEW FORD PERFORMANCE DERIVATIVES:
EXCITEMENT FOR THE STREET
FRANKFURT, 11 September, 2001 – The spirit of performance is back at Ford.
Performance derivatives of the popular Ford Focus and Ford Mondeo are making their debuts at the 2001 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, and all will hit the showrooms early in 2002:
· Mondeo ST220: Ford’s executive grand touring car, powered by an exhilarating 220-PS, 3.0-litre, 24-valve V6 engine On Page 3
· Focus ST170: The understated power and refinement of a 170-PS performance model that extends Ford Focus’ class-leading driving dynamics On Page 6
· Focus RS: The ultimate, 220-PS Focus for true performance purists, inspired by Ford’s World Rally Championship Focus On Page 10
Performance Promise
“Performance cars are a major part of our product-led transformation of the Ford brand in Europe,” said Martin Leach, Ford’s vice president of product development. “We’ve promised our customers that we would be bringing them a variety of exciting performance derivatives, and these new vehicles prove that we’re delivering.”
An accomplished performance-car driver himself, Leach says he is pleased to bring back the famously uncompromising Ford “RS” performance brand for purists plus develop further the refined and accessible performance of Ford’s contemporary “ST” (Sport Technologies) marque. The two-tiered approach to performance technology is part of Ford of Europe’s effort to create stronger emotional bonds with its customers, and to reinforce Ford's position as a leader for driving quality.
Further strengthening the commitment, Leach confirmed this summer appointment of a new Director of Ford of Europe's Special Vehicle Engineering (SVE) division. Jost Capito, former Chief Operating Officer of the Swiss-based Formula 1 team, Red Bull Sauber Petronas, will lead the Dunton, UK-based specialist engineering team from October 1, 2001.
"We are delighted to welcome Jost to the team," said Martin Leach, Vice President Product Development, Ford of Europe. "He is an engineer and manager of the very highest calibre, with fantastic motorsport experience. Thanks to the past success of performance Fords like the XR range, and the Escort and Sierra Cosworths, SVE has a reputation for developing some of the most exciting and affordable cars on the road. Jost will play a big part in building on that reputation in the future.

There's your proof of SVE's influence on the ST170 which is the basis of the US SVT Focus.
