Hello, I am new here and my wife picked up a new Focus about two weeks ago and although its her car I can't but mod it since I also drive it. I noticed all of the european ford focus's have a dual exhaust set up. After some research I found they are basically using a transverse muffler. I used a Borla muffler and some 3.5" stainless tips. A local muffler shop did the install. I removed the middle muffler and dropped in a K&N cone filter. Here are some pictures. The car sounds so sweet and there is no audio drone at any speed.
Parts List: Borla # 40477 2.5" 2.5" 19"X 5.5" X 10.25" Transverse Mount Split Exit $$ 265.00
Can this system be done using a muffler that does not create a louder sound? I don't want a louder sound but like the looks. Can anyone suggest a muffler?
That is what i wanted originally, but after taking off the muffler i like the sound. It only gets noisy at WOT and when normal driving you almost cant hear it. I will post a vid when I have time.
Looks good Booberry. Unfortunately here in Pennsyltucky we have to have the exhaust exit from the body of the vehicle or cab of the truck to pass safety for state inspection.
Thanks for the post, all the pics, advice, & instructions. Your dual tip mod looks great, and is very affordable in my book. I agree there's no reason to not do something like this when a vehicle is new.........so you can enjoy it for the longest period.
I'm due home from Iraq in early November, will pick up my new '12 Candy Blue SE Sport at the dealers, and start [wrenchin] on it. I've only got a month before I head back, so simple mods like yours will fit my timeline to a T.
PS: Your pics make me glad I went with the Candy Blue! [headbang]
I just used Borlas "find a cat back exhaust for your vehicle" menu and came up with zip. How about some part numbers and/or some more detailed info on what you did, and how you did it! Thanks!
Its not a borla product line its borla mufflers everything else is fabricated. This threads first post has info on the traverse muffler all you have to do is find the center to center 2.5" borla muffler for the cars mid muffler.
OKAY Fine Ill be nice (rep would be helpful for the Original poster and also me)
1)Borla ProXS Muffler 40842S
2)Borla ProXS Muffler 3" Off In 2.5" Off Out 19" Case
Yea, I looked up the Borla transverse muffler (cited by the thread starter) yesterday and found that OK. I took FB58s post/pics to mean he'd actually gotten a complete cat back system from Borla. Guess I gotta work on those reading comprehension skills. [dunno]. If FB58s is fabricated, that's cool; I'm more inclined to just replace the muffler and tips, like in the thread starters pics. Pretty sure I can find muffler & body shop back home that would like the work.
That sounds great. I will be installing a single exit borla tomorrow and will keep the first ford muffler. Hope it sounds just a little louder than the dual with the ford's first.
FocusBoy - I'm having a difficult time locating a Borla 440477. Do ou think a Magnaflow 12268 would work? I don't want to increase the exhaust sound but like thelooks of duals.
Finally put a single outlet borla on. A bit disappointed in the sound as it is too quite for me. On the other hand, I've never had an exhaust on any of my cars turbo or not that I thought was loud enough. In any case, just as I suspected, the first muffler does most of the muffling. The axle-back looks pretty stock and sounds like the car should have sounded like from the factory. Almost silent at idle and some bark when accelerating.
I guess, that's fine. This is not the type of car someone my age would want to be screaming. Did loose some mpg. I would say at least 1mpg, but that may be due to the cooler weather we've been having. Or may be the stock system does provide additional back pressure for better fuel economy at the expense of some power. If that is the case, a full catback would see some gains. I am leaving it as a possibility.
Nice job on the single tip. It looks better than stock for sure. I can't beleive this thread is up to 14 pages.
Well just to follow up. The Borla exhaust is working great and the tone has not changed in the last 2k miles. I am very happy I chose the Borla muffler. Too bad they don't make a bolt on system. I am sure it would sell well.
Any one look into a 3rd gen Miata muffler. They are all stainless and have nice tips, and the inlet is on the proper side. Miata guys are allways swapping out these for aftermarket systems. You should be able to pickup a takeoff real cheap.
