Hatchback door latch not closing

I am having an issue with my Focus 2004 ZX5 hatchback door. The door latch is not locking when the hatchback door is closed. Is this the correct sub-forum to ask a question about this problem? To be honest, I don't know much about cars, so I'm not sure where to start.
thank you

Does it latch at all ? By that, I mean does it latch but not close tight ? There are rubber stops on the hatch you can turn to adjust the tightness/looseness. If not, you may need a latch assembly.

Hi.

It turns out, this was a really dumb problem. Somehow that I don't understand, the latch mechanism on the hatchback door was in the closed and locked position, even though the door was open.

Thus, whenever I tried to close the hatchback door, the latch mechanism was just banging up against the little metal post on the top of the rear bumper, around which it would normally attach and lock.

I just now tried using the button on the keyfob to "open" the hatchback door, and that fixed it. It unlocked the latch on the door, allowing it to close properly.

Sorry for the stupid question. I'm not sure how the latch got stuck in the closed/locked position, even thought the hatchback door was open.

Not a dumb question. You had a problem and you asked about it. Good thing you didn't slam it down and cause another problem.

This happens from time to time on my 03 sedan alll the time. Just use the key fob or the trunk button in the car. It broke under warranty cost the ford dealer like 200$ to fix.

Bit of lube in the mechanism helps. My favorite for all latches is spray penetrating grease.

On my sedan it's not uncommon for the latch not to open all the way, then it won't close as well either. opening it all the way with the safety release tab B4 closing it is my "fix" when this happens. Quite a distinct "thunk" if it closes B4 wrapping around the post as a result of not opening all the way.

Kudos for figuring it out, we could have been guessing for a bit if you didn't see what was happening.

Cheers!
