Its a nice car, read up on it yesterday, glad they got rid of that stupid smiley creepy front end.
It is a lot better but still looks too busy, too fish-like and too Japanese for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that, a lot of folks like that kind of thing.

Eh, Sedan looks too 6ish, and the hatch just reminds me of a Giulietta.

Engine development looks good- until you compare it to the Focus. This is the difference between Atkinson cycle and Otto cycle engines. When you go Atkinson (which is older than Otto cycle IIRC), you gain fuel economy, but lose hp. That means that you get less power per cube, but more torque in Mazda trim. That's not normal for Atkinson cycle engines. Typically you lose power all around.

2012 Focus= 160 hp, 146 lb-ft---- 80hp/L
2014 Mz3= 150 hp, 155 lb-ft------ 75hp/L
2.5L = 184hp, 185 lb-ft------------ 73.6hp/L

Sedan looks a lot better, and I'm really glad to see that stupid "grin" gone. Not sure how I feel about the hatch. Minus the front clip, it reminds me a lot of the Elantra GT. I think a more prominent spoiler would help, but the MS3 probably has dibs on that.

autoblog gives the mazda3 a rave review...it sounds like mazda accomplished with the automatic what ford hoped to do:
http://www.autoblog.com/2013/07/12/2...w-first-drive/

Quote:
But the automatic is in no way a Debbie Downer. It uses a traditional torque converter to get things moving at crawl speeds, but beyond that, the action is far closer to a dual-clutch than a conventional slushbox. The Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic comes with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and this is one case where I highly encourage use of them during spirited driving. That whole line about being dual-clutch-quick is the honest truth, and the action is really enjoyable. But I also found a lot to like about the automatic's Sport mode, which is programmed to prevent shifts in either direction. On one long stretch of twists during my drive, the Mazda willingly held onto third gear, even in many instances where I fully expected it to upshift. And it'll hold a gear all the way to the 6,500-rpm redline if that's what the driver demands. The Sport mode of the transmission doesn't feel as engaging on less-involving sets of switchbacks – you're better off just using the paddles here – but really, this automatic transmission is well-tuned for folks who give a flip about driving.

Yeah, I just read that review; I'm jealous that unlike with the Focus, the Mazda gets more than one engine choice with the 2.0 and 2.5L engines. Also, although I prefer the styling of the Focus to the Mazda 3, I would give that up for a better-shifting automatic and more powerful engine in a heartbeat.

I hope Mazda gets rewarded with making a good compact driver's car with decent sales.

Pre-production reviews are looking very solid on the Mazda3 so far. We've have to see if that changes with the final production car. Autoblog's pictures are excellent, this car is starting to grow on me...

I'm reading that the 2.5L/6 speed manual combo will have late availability, which is unfortunate.

Interesting reading reviews from the reviewers in different countries.
The North American reviews are loving the new Mazda3, whereas the Europe and one Aussie reviewer I have read are liking the new design language, but are not giving high marks for driving dynamics, and cheap interior bits compared to the competition.
Also a few remarks about the hatch resembling a certain Infiniti SUV
Also remarks on both engines tested 2.0 & 2.5 not up to snuff when many competitors are ahead of the game with the new turbo DI engines.
Complaints of the 2.0 & 2.5 not being too alive in the low rpm range, hence the comparison to the new turbo's being offered by some competitors.
Transmissions both auto and manual were + areas, and the surprising remark being the sedan being the better looking then the hatch. Now that is a weird remark especially from the Euro reviewers.
