Like the title says, this is my "build thread." You more than likely won't see anything crazy awesome like me turboing my Focus (not yet anyways haha). I am making this thread to hopefully give people ideas of small things that can be done without having alot of time. I am currently in college, have a job, gf, and family to be with to so I dont have time to do anything major. Although when I get a real job I do plan on lowering my car, and eventually taking out the back seats and doing some custom wood paneling. None of those crazy shinanigans will be seen for awhile though. [shhh]

First off, this first post will probably be pretty long. I bought my Focus in late March of 2011 (a year from now already! Wow!) and have been doing things to it ever since. I will take you month by month into what I have done to my car, and post whatever pictures I may have.

Alright so my dad and I found my 2001 ZX3 on the Cincinnatti craigslist for $4000. We drove up there and bought it for $3700. It had 91k miles on it, and was completely stock. It was a stick shift. My last car (and first car) was a 1995 Ford Probe SE and it was an auto. Here are some pics of what the car looked like the day I got it:

There wasn't really anything too wrong with it. The previous owner was an elderly lady and her son did all of the work to it. He jerry rigged everything possible. The reverse safety mechanism was bypassed, he made a normal door key work for the ignition because he lost the normal key, the speakers were all missmatched and not made for cars, and alot of the wiring for the speakers was connected by being twisted together and wrapped in tape! Oh and the AC needed charging, and there was a vibration coming from the front right of the car. I would rate the body as a 7/10 because there is dings, dents and sratches in the paint. But none of this stuff was really that bad and didnt cost much of anything to fix it.

March 2011:
I was determined not to spend any money on this car. The probe I had I had just put $1300 into it to get it running again, and felt stupid after I spent money modding it. That money could have easily paid for the repairs it needed. So I went around looking at things that could be repaired. My antenna was rusty and cut up. That was the first thing I bought! A stubby antenna off ebay for $5. I replaced the valve cover gasket I also swapped the system from the Probe that I had put in two summers before when I got my lisense. I made this box later in May but here is a pic:

April 2011:
Shortly after putting my system in, I decided I wanted to paint my interior. I had just done this to the Probe the summer before, and I loved the way it turned out. In this car, I took out alot of little interior pieces and cleaned them. Then I painted them black with Fusion spray paint. (Made for plastic.) Then I took a red can of Fusion spray paint and held it halfway down so that it spit paint. I thought it looked sick. I know some of you probably wont like this, but I love it. (I suppose thats all that matters. [grinking]) Here are some pics:

So far I was doing well, I was saving money on gas by consitantly getting 31 mpg over the Probe's 28 mpg, and I wasnt buying anything extra. Then came May....

May 2011:
I was getting obsessed with hypermiling. lol I started looking into mods to get better MPG because I drive over 400-500 miles a week. I decided I should buy a new CAI insted of a used one, so I got a FSwerks CAI for $220. I love it. But I dont think itd worth $220. its basically a piece of metal to block the heat, and a filter. This kit didnt even replace the stock plastic tubing alot of other kits replaced. But I still love it. It brought my MPG up to 36 (I also started driving like a grandpa). Here is a pic:

I made a box for my subs because I was bored and feeling crafty. [cool] The box was really heavy, but it organized everything nicely and looked good. The box is shown in March 2011.

June 2011:
My dad got his exhaust done on his F350. He asked the guy how much it would be to have my car done, and the guy said $120 for a catback exhaust system. I felt like this was a really good deal. I didnt want to spend the money after just having bought the CAI, but I knew I should. lol So I did. I loved the way it sounded. To this day it is still my favorite 4 cylinder exhaust. Here is a video. Fast forward to a minute to hear the exhaust.
http://s1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa405/bmxican190/?action=view&current=BackyardTrails.mp4

I replaced my CV axle with my friend because the guy that test drove my car after he installed my car said that is what it probably was. I believed him. lol I replaced it and it took maybe a tiny bit of the vibration away, but that was it.

I was getting tired of not having AC so I tried recharging it. It somewhat works. My AC would get cold after 20 minutes or so so I think I may need a new pump or something. I hate using AC though because it sucked towards MPG.

July 2011:
(I cant remember if it was June or July) I got my windows tinted. I got all my windows done with a lifetime warranty and front window strip for $120. I felt like this was a good deal, and the people who did it did a great job. As soon as my windows were done, I knew that my car was starting to look modded and I would start to mod it more and more. lol During June I also put a "Be American Buy American" sticker on my rear window. 'Mericah FTW!

I also found out my coil springs were broke. I always wondered why my car was so slammed in the front. lol Apparntly for 2001 zx3s there was a recall for having them replaced up to 10 years of your build date. I was actually within a month or so of that 10 years! Well the dealer dragged his feet on it and after a week or 2 said he couldnt do it. So we bought some from advanced. Looking back on it now I wish I had bought a good set of lowering springs or something.

August 2011:
I was rotating the tires when I finally found the cause of the vibration! My front rim had a huge dent in it. I felt stupid not noticing it. I felt better though knowing I found a problem. I then started searching for cheap rims, preferably SVT ones.

I also went to Focusfest 2011. I bought mudflaps from a guy there and installed them. I didnt get rims like I thought (I was picturing thousands of Focuses and parts being there). My dad won subs at FF11. I wasnt surprised because he seems to always win little things at bmx races and whatnot. He said he wasnt going to use them, so he gave them to me. Thanks Dad!

After I installed the mudflaps I replaced and painted the cowl cover black because it was really faded and cracked. Then I made a second intake for my CAI. There is no noticable difference, but it looks rather sick. I would still like to wrap it in some sort of insulated tape though.

September 2011:
I got some LEDs for my interior, and my parents got me rubber Ford floor mats. The LEDs my friend bought didnt fit in the dome, so they are still to this day stuck to the headliner. I am going to figure a nicer way to mount them though because they look silly and fall down alot. Oh and the floor mats are awesome that my parents got me!

I think this was when this happened but Im not sure. I was doing something to the trans (I remember putting new tranny fluid in, but I cant remember for the life of me what I was originally doing! lol) and I went to test drive the car and the brake lines blew out. Me and my friend replaced the rear brake lines and I was good to go.

My back left tire was so dry rotted it was bulging and cracking. I got it replaced. So now all 4 tires had different tread. lol

October 2011:
I believe this is when this happened. My gf accidently shut her seatbelt in her door. The door then wouldnt open until me and my friend looked at it. this metal part broke, and I got a new one which fixed it.

I am not sure when I did this but I will put it here. I tinted my turn signals and grille lights. They turned out pretty well. But then I got stupid and tried painting eyebrows on my headlights and I got overspray on my fender. Here is what it looked like, just without the roofrack at the time:

I finally got my FF goody bag in the mail and I put my FF lisense plate frame on and a Focusfest sticker on the windshield.

November 2011:
I bought a Kona roof rack from a member here on FX. I believe I got it for $250, but I cant remember for sure. I bought ebay bike mounts, and I liked it alot. I didnt think about the drop in MPG, so once that happened I wish I had never bought it. lol But the roofrack looks awesome, and it comes in handy.

I discovered the miracle of Plastidip. I plastidipped the eyebrows on my car and they turned out much better than the tint did. I plastidipped my rims as well. I liked the way they looked alot. So happy in fact, I was going to just find a stock rim that wasnt bent and plastidip that and not look for aftermarket ones anymore. I was tired of contacting people and only seeing bent wheels, or being lied to and people claiming their bent rims were straight. lol

My car broke down for the first time. I was on the way home and all of my lights started going crazy and dimming. I pulled over and the car woudldnt start. I was thinking alternator but i didnt know. My dad came and picked me up and towed me car. We looked at it later. I was starting to tear the car down to get the alternator out when I noticed the wires leading from a wiring harness were snapped. I replaced it and tha fixed it! So if your car has this problem check their first.

The last week of November I won Ford Racing Fiesta EAP rims! the bolt patern is the same, and they are basically the same as Focus EAP rims. They
are a bit darker in color, and the inside of the rim is all black insted of gray. I like them better. I got them for $450 brand new shipped to my door, which I thought was a seal because they are $170 a piece on Ford racing's website without shipping. I wasnt going to put them on until the Spring.

December 2011:
I ordered stickers for my fairing. I was planning on getting one with Christmas money. I also ordered my amp for the subs my dad won at FF!

My car turned over 100k already.

January 2012:
I installed the subs and amp with my friend. They were actually only a tiny but better than my old ones, but I was happy with them. They were in a bigger box as well. My parents totaled their 2006 ZXW. This came as a shock, but here is the thread I made about that:
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278461&highlight=wrecked

I test fitted my EAPs. I was pretty nervous because they looked like they were going to rub.

Right before my parents totaled their car I bumped into it in the driveway and did this:

February 2012:
I ordered the Yakima fairing I wanted off of amazon. I went to install it out and found it wouldnt work without some modding. So I just drilled it into my Kona rack and that worked. lol I then put my stickers on a week later. Here is a pic:

I also bought a fancy shmancy shift knob from a member in canada for $25. Its weighted and I love it.

Oh and my parents got a new Focus. 2010 SES. [80?] It sure is nice!

I fixed my seatbelts finally. They never retracted fully. Turns out when I put my system in originally when I first got the car I never put the panel back on right. lol

March 2012:
Wow an hour and a half of typing and I caught up already! lol Yesterday I got my EAPs on! [clap] This was my most noticable mod by far. I am actually waiting for the pics to upload for the thread of showing pics of my new rims and my parents new focus. So here is some pics of all of that:

Here is the thread for more pics and info:
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282289

I tinted my new grille I bought (old one was really messed up) and did some stuff to my emblem to make it my own. Here is a how-to thread I made for it last night:
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282185&highlight=paint+emblem

I took an hour or so to get all the overspray off from the eyebrows and scrape marks off my car from hitting my moms car. Before: (See the other pic of hitting my moms car as well)

After:

So basically I just have a really clean dent. lol

I was nominated for ROTM for April! I was kinda surprised other people nominated me. I believe they were being nice because I nominated them. lol I know I wont win but it feels good to be noticed. Feel free to vote for me! haha [headbang]Here is the thread for noms:
http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282204

I have to say something. Often when I say I, me, or we, I forget to mention my family and friends that help. My dad always helps me with stuff when I need help. We always mess around with our cars because we joke around saying whos car is better. lol He has an escort with the same motor as me. (He could probably win though.) My best friend Ryan and his dad Bob help me alot as well. Thanks guys!! [strongman]

Check back often for more updates! Feel free to leave comments, questions, etc. about anything I have done. [8)] I have talked to alot of you on your build threads and always enjoy the convo. [thumb] Cheers! [cheers]

I kept a secret on here for once, but I did mention it on FX on Facebook. I bought some K-Sport Kontrol Pro's at the end of November. They had 3,000 miles on them. My buddy was home from the Navy at Christmas, so I wanted to install them with him. It turned out that we only had one day (3 hours to be specific) to get them installed on Christmas day. I didn't want to rush, so I was planning on doing the fronts only. Well within 15 minutes, we had both of my old front coilovers out and went to slide the new ones in. But the new coilovers were so short. Lol I adjusted the bottom nut where the spring sits so give me a wee bit more room. We forced the knuckle up to the coilover, but atleast it fit. Then we noticed a problem. The sway bar end links were a good 3 inches from the mount on the side of the coilover. Just for giggles, I dropped the car down to see where it sat. The tire was sitting on the fender. Lol I was so confused... I had no idea what was going on because I didn't see any other way they could be adjusted. Then I remembered that the reason everyone loved K-Sports was because the whole gas chamber assembly spins on the shaft. So that way you can control your ride height, and not lose ride quality. When I figured it out, it was already midnight and we couldn't get them unfrozen. I let them soak in PB Blaster for a week at the apartment and brought them to my parents place and got them unfrozen within a few seconds.

Soooo, fast forward to yesterday. My fiancé had her bridal shower, and her brother and I wanted to get the K-Sports on the car finally. The install went pretty great, the fronts were on and dialed in within an hour or so. The backs we had a small problem with. We had no idea how the washers and grommets went on the strut. The seller only gave me one washer. So we ran into town and picked up some hardware. We got it figured out and installed the rest of the way and took it for a drive. She rides real well! Better than the other coilovers by a little bit. I did go 3/4" lower than what I was at before. My fender heights are currently 23.5" up front and 24" in the rear. But I still have about 2.5" of threads left. :D So I could easily go a lot lower. I'm going to buy some adjustable sway bar end links first (Massive I'm guessing), and get those camber arms installed before I do that. I haven't taken any pictures yet. When I do, I'll post them on here.

Sounds like you have been busy Stephen! And here I was expecting a picture update to go with it...what were the old coilovers you were running? I'm sure new makes a world of difference!

Good job using some ingenuity to get those backs on. Sounds like it was ahead scratcher for a while.

Sounds like you care more about the wheels than the actual car haha. But you have been wanting those wheels for a while. Nice to see you are keeping them clean. Now get that car cleaned!

Wedding is creeping up slowly but surely, I'm sure you are both excited and ready to get it done at the same time and do some house hunting and start your own life. Congrats again and good to hear from you.
The old coilovers I had were TA Technix. Honestly that weren't really that bad of a coilover, especially for the cheap price I got them for. (Around $350 new shipped to my door on eBay.) They're essentially Racelands. Anyways yep the new ones go way lower, and ride better. They have camber adjustments built in and comfort settings and other fancy shenanigans.

I care about the whole car. Lol I washed my car atleast every month all the way up until I moved out. The only touchless car wash I liked was out near my parents place, and everytime I drive out there, I'm always in a hurry to get there or get back. I'll clean her before the meet on the 7th of February hopefully. Are you going to that? Can't remember what you told me before.

Yup I'm excited about the wedding! It's taken up a lot of time and planning. But it will be worth it when its over. If I go full time at work this year or next year, I'll be parking the focus for a bit and buying a DD and making the focus a little more show worthy. But a lot of things have to happen in order for that to happen...like a house and garage... lol So who knows.

Ahh that's right...the eBay special. I think I remember you buying them actually a long while back. Seems they held up pretty well for you at least. Can't beat the price either! I think you will come to enjoy the fancy shenanigans. Low is good.

I posted in the Xtreme Boredom thread. I am unsure if I am going to go or not. Finding time and having the funds available. If not this one I plan to hit 2-3 plus FF. Just started my "real life" job, well will start Monday. And maybe a vacation this summer if I get time off. It's 3rd shift, any tips on that? Do ya eat or just eat before then go to bed when you get home?

Full time would be great. Mainly the extra money though. I bet the focus would love the garage life. You'll figure it all out in good time. Search long and good, it will be worth it.

I would go ahead and just drive the escort around haha. Put in a water cooking system and then mount a fish tank to the hood lol.

So wheels are done. Suspension done. Paint is done. Body is done. What's next?

#1,470 ·
Congrats on the job! I actually work more like second shift. Currently I am working from 2:30pm to 9:30 pm. I eat when I wake up and when I get home with Jessi before she goes to work. She works third shift, and she eats right before she leaves. When she gets home around 5 am or so she goes to bed.

I honestly don't know whats next. Lol I need new fenders bad. If I'm really crazy about details, she'll need repainted again some day. Once shes not my daily, I really wanted to gut the back seat and hatch and lay down linoleum or wood flooring. I have been debating on going with some less aggressive wheels. Something 16x8 ET 25 to ET35. I have put some thought into maybe turbo-ing her some day too. But as far as realistic goals go... I'll be content with getting some new fenders and keeping up with maintenance. Here is the list hanging on my wall of what I need to do:

-Aim headlights
-Change fuel filter
-Fix broken reverse lights
-Bottle opener grill
-Install camber arms
-Check spark plugs
-Check motor mounts
-Check tranny fluid
-Check alternator harness
-Replace bolts on headlights

Most of this stuff is small and will only take a minute. I just wrote it down anyways so that way I won't forget during all the craziness. haha

#1,472 ·
Hmm I think everyone needs some of that.

Wheels wheels wheels that's all he thinks about lol. It's a shame they aren't cheap. Get a collection going and you will be able to hang them up in your future garage. "What do I feel like this month, let's go with these".

That is an easy list. Little tedious maybe but not bad by any means. I'm in the struggle of whether or not to buy a new crash bar...

Got a fair amount going to the first meet?

#1,476 ·
Of course its the first meet of the year and its at bluegrass indoor!
Ill do that when I get home. I was trying to post these pictures but when I went to post it deleted everything since you guys responded. haha

The strut nut on the rear struts were loose and clunking. I tightened them with a wrench just now. They weren't horribly loose. I think its because I used a drill and forgot to hand tighten them... guess Ill see if they keep coming loose.

Here was the quality tester on Sunday: lol

Yes my brake lines are now loosely secured with zip ties...

#1,479 ·
I removed the oem mounts & just used the rubber bushings only. CFM has a shim/ washer kit for something like 26,00 to take up the clearance. I kept them for a week or so & then tossed them. IDK why ford did that.

#1,480 ·
I found out the bottom bolt was just hand tight on my back right strut. Lol It's fixed now.

Ready for pictures? Good. I don't ever post any. AND GUESS WHAT JEFF - MY CAR IS CLEAN. So I definitely had to take pictures. The first ones in the horse arena is at my buddy's farm. I went over there to help with a Mustang. The rest are of the meet for FX. Enjoy.

The story behind this is that Alex rolled up to the meet in a cloud of smoke. He blew a coolant line. I ran across the street to where he stopped because I thought his car was on fire, but then I realized it was only steam. Lol It was the best way to roll up to a meet ever. Either way, I'm in love with his wagon.

Thanks Bryan!

Turned out to be quite the simple fix then, which was nice I suppose haha. You checked everything but forgot to check everything again. Does it ride much better now than your eBay specials?

Ahh, singling me out huh!!! I almost didnt recognize what car was yours being it was clean and all. It looks great man. No dirt, can see a reflection in it. Im sure everyone was impressed by it. That was quite a bit of pictures, throw one up next week when it is dirty again. Mine is absolutely filthy from the sand and snow...

That wagon is hot stuff I have to say. Wish I could have seen it in person. Maybe later this year I can meet up with all of you. How many did you have yesterday? Go-karting go good or did you get last lol? Spin Kyle out for me?
They ride better for sure, but was it worth spending the $600? As of right now... its iffy. But these will allow me to go another two whole inches lower.... so when I'm at that point some day I'll probably feel like it's worth it then.

Yeah and the rear end started clunking again. It was fine all day yesterday, and all day today, but on my way home from getting fitted for a suit for the wedding, it started clunking again. Guess I actually need to find the torque speck now.

Yeah hopefully you'll see it. He hasn't been to a meet since he had his slammed mk2 coupe. But he talks about putting the wagon up for sale... so you may never see it. I hope whoever buys it keeps it in the group. Or I hope Alex keeps it. Because I love it. lol

We had maybe 10 people I think. 6 or 7 cars. I was happy with the turnout. 3 of the people were new-ish, and 2 members came from Evansville. And no, Kyle was too fast for me in the first race. Jessi had the go pro, and she caught the end of the move. Sida had a camera on too, and he sent me his videos. He had some good footage of a separate battle between him and Kyle. I'm going to start editing it tonight. When I'm done I'll post the video on here too. I think I got 4th on the first race and 3rd on the second race. I had a blast!

Nah the second race was only with 5 of us he had a faster time than me but never caught me. First race I caught up to him and he was on my tail but we hit traffic in the middle of a chicane and I pulled some jedi magic and weaved through them without stopping haha. Hopefully he has it on go pro.

#1,489 ·
You can do a lot of things for $600...but some think it is worth it. Personal Preference. Why didnt you use a torque wrench to begin with!?? Guess you were all excited you were washing your car you didn't think of it. Is Sida the one from up in Columbus, IN?

Wish I could have gone and smoked you all...but then you wouldn't race me again Bahaha!! Its always good to see some new members show up. Cant wait to see the videos.

#1,490 ·
Yeah if I was smart, I would have just bought these to begin with. It for sure all depends on what direction you want to go with your car!

And nope, I don't ever use a torque wrench. It probably sounds horrible, but if its important I just use an impact. Besides on wheel bearings, I know its horrible for them to be tightened with an impact.

Yes Sida has a blue ST and is from Columbus, IN.

The video is turning out pretty cool so far!! I'm almost done. Once I take care of some other things, I'll hopefully finish it and upload it tonight. It's about 8 minutes long right now, so it will probably have to upload over night. Lol Either way, expect it within 24 hours.

Updates: I'm married! Lol

Remember like two or three months ago when I had that stupid noise that kept coming from the rear of my car? I kept tightening the bottom strut bolts in the rear by laying in the parking lot in my apartment. On the 5th time, I drove it back to my parents place and looked at it. I forgot to install the bushing that the bolt goes through on the bottom of the strut. Unfortunately I didn't have it with me, so we made one from some spacers and rubber. So that's fixed... wooo... big update...

Anyways, more on the wedding. I got married on March 14th. Of course I wanted the car to be part of it, so here's all the car related photos from that day:

They hid the cans under my car so I couldn't see them. I went to drive away and heard a really bad metal on metal sound. I was like ughhh this is so embarrassing, my E-brake is hung up or something. Everyone was staring too. Then I saw the cans in the rear view mirror and put two and two together. Lol

This is my best man Ryan. I have mentioned him many times over the past four years, he's helped me turn the car into what it is now. Honestly he's helped me way more than I have mentioned. He's currently in the Navy near Seattle, so it was awesome that he got to come home for this.

For the honeymoon, we went to Fort Myers Beach, Florida. I rented a Mustang. I figured this was my one chance to drive something new and nice. It was only 2 months old. Sure it was only a V6, but it was still so much fun! The paddle shifters were actually pretty cool. We had a blast in it! Here's some of my favorite shots that I took of it:

The FX meet season will be starting up in a month, so I'm about to be busy with that again while searching for a house (with a garage!). So you probably won't see a lot of activity from this thread still. Once I get a house, there's a fairly good chance I'll be parking the Focus and buying my dad's escort. I have a long list of things I need to do to the Focus, but no place and no time to do it. I started building a dream list of stuff to do to it, we'll see how much of it I actually do.... hehe

Well this build thread just went from super happy to super depressing. Remember when I said there wouldn't be too much activity on here from me? Wrong.

My car was the victim of "The Great Louisville Dookie-Butter Flood of 2015" as I've been calling it. Louisville experienced heavy rain all day. There is a basin area behind our apartment that normally never has water in it. Well it rained all day hard enough that the water filled up that area, and then flooded our apartments.

Luckily our apartment is on the second floor. But not so luckily, my car was under about 4 feet of water. The water was at one point up to the taillights. On the inside, the water made it up to the top of the steering wheel. The water came up so fast I didn't have time to do anything. I only noticed the water when the alarms on other cars started going off. It was 4 a.m., so I couldn't see the water. At that point it was already too late.

My apartment was in the worst hit of areas, we were on the news. Once daylight finally broke, we all noticed GE was burning. Half a mile or so away is where GE's appliance park facility is. One of the buildings caught fire, which smoked for days. It truly looked like an apocalypse. Cars buried in water, people running around, all with a huge fire in the background.

My wife was at work, and we weren't reunited until 11 a.m. Friday morning. Once the water was low enough, she picked me and the cats up and we left the area. I came back Saturday afternoon for the car.

I took all the photos off my phone and uploaded them to photobucket for your viewing pleasure. In this post I will have all of the pictures from the actual day of the flood (Friday 4/3/15). In the next post, I will put ones of the car itself.

This was the first photo I took. I threw clothes on, and ran outside and snapped this pic. I ran back inside, put my boots on, grabbed my keys and phone, and went back out to go down to the car. I wanted to disconnect the battery. The water was coming in in waves, and it was up to my waste already. It hit me that the water would already be over the battery, so I didn't want to risk it.

It really sucked ya know? Four years of loving and modding the thing and seeing this happening in front of you with nothing I could do. I sat there for well over 5 hours before I could even get to it. It was the only car in the area, so I thought the force of the water hitting it would make it move. But it never budged.

I know this photo is super grainy, but its a dumpster on the roof of an F150.

Probe. :( But it started after dumping gallons out the exhaust. I was shocked so many people were trying to start their cars.
