I finally decided to make myself a thread I can call my own. I'm not expecting to do any major builds in the near future, but since I'm always doing little changes to my car, I figured I might as well put them all in one place and stop cluttering up the rest of the forum.
A bit about me and the car. I bought my 2002 Ford Focus Svt in June, 2010 and had no real hands on knowledge about working on or modding a car except some basics I learned from my dad and from reading auto magazines. Over the past few months I have done a lot of work on this car and have really learned how to do many things. In other words, it doesn't matter how much knowledge you have, you can do anything that I have done. Furthermore, I will be the first one to admit that I have not done many things in the best or most efficient way possible. I am just learning and having fun.
Thread Rules (Or lack thereof)
Feel free to post any kind of comments or questions. If anyone would like to know how to do anything, let me know and I can give you some of the resources I used. Becuase of the way I have this thread organized, it doesn't matter how cluttered the rest of the thread gets. Post anything you feel like from suggestions, questions, and random comments. I won't feel bad if anything gets a little of topic. [thumb]
really glad after our chat/meet that you decided to mod the SVT bumper to work with the flares! that's gonna look fantastic and really different when finished.
another option (though possibly less desirable) is to cut them so that they sit JUST right on the body and then mount them with stainless rivets or screws kind of like truck flares or carbon flares the Z guys run....
Thanks and thanks. I wasn't planning on doing that until I started laying the bondo. It just kind of made sense to use those lines.
That looks awesome. On that car. I don't know if a Fofo would be able to pull it off, though. You could always fill in the hole too and get a more flush look. It wouldn't work for RS fenders, however, because they change the shape of the quarter panel in front of the wheels as well.
"I'm just laying mine up over top. However, the forward section on mine (I trimmed away as much fiberglass as to keep the most OE sheet metal in place) will need some work to get to lay down where it needs to be.
Maybe I'll hammer it in...maybe I'll chop it out...?
I trimmed back the sheet metal behind here, because the RS wheel openings are larger...
More fiddle work on the bumper. Increased the slope of the foglight line so it wasn't so saggy by the flare. I may have gone too far but I'll let it sit for the week and see how it looks in the real world again.
is the bondo going to be permanent, or are you going to make a mold of the shape you added and make a plastic or fiberglass panel to bond to the urethane of the bumper? MY concern would be that bondo is not rated for urethane/plastic and will likely crack and fall off in a few months.
There is a layer of fiberglass just under the bondo (you can see some parts coming through) and I may do another layer over everything again. I am planning on keeping this setup as "permanent" but would also like to make a mold from the finished bumper for security in case it does start breaking or the whole bumper gets busted or something. I'd hate to loose all this work with nothing to show for it.
if you do make a mold, let me know.. i am curious on how to do this.. not for this type of thing.. but i have my own idea for a custom object.. hmm.. i'm really loving the look of this..
Played around cutting the Svt side skirt to get them to fit over the front RS fender. I won't be putting them on the car until the fender is painted but now I know that I won't have to modify the fender.
Ignore the the 5-spoke wheels. I'm sealing the crack on the EAP; it was starting to leak again after replacing the tire.
Newly acquired fender triangles. Not installed yet.
Made this miniature paint booth this weekend:
And the first project used in it. The fender hasn't been sanded or polished yet but it's finally painted:
