rear tires cupping again.
so i repalced OEM tires at 21 k miles cause the wear and the noise was BLOODY unbearable.. (wifes car). Now the second set is doing the same. I finally read somwhere here that the controller arm in the rear has a TSB out on it. So, i am about to take the ole 03 ZX3 in to see if they will honor it. How are my odds that they will fix it under warranty? If not, then i suppose it will have to come out of me own pocket. Is it something i can fix myself with better parts or aftermaket parts. If i revamped all the suspension with aftermarket parts would that be a good alternative. My wife is not a ricer, but she does like to spin it at times, and she needs something reliable, not a car i have to replace tires on every 20k miles. Help us out ... ! Thanks

Well? Anyone? I called my local Piece of [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]** dealership and asked if i could bring it in and have them run a concern code on certain certain TSB that may be causing the tires to cup. Of course i got the ole " its your alignment sir, not the tires". I told them about a possible faulty control arm.. and he basically just talked down to me like i was an ignorant customer. It really tears me up that service departements do this to customers. So i politely said " i can see where this is going, thanks for your help anyways." All i wanted was for them to check it out and see if my car was one of the ones with the problem... which i am pretty sure it is. I will never recommend that service department again. I will fix the problem my damn self

here is another update. I printed out these bulletins and took them to the dealership i purchased the car from and they cehcked it out and found out that 1) there are new alignment specs and 2) there are new parts for the rear suspension (tie rods they said). They will be replacing the parts and doing teh alingment under warranty. Wooo hooo

All Dealerships are willing to sell you any car you like but don't like to repair it if something goes wrong, espically if there's TSB on it. I'm glad you persued the case and got things done.

I would like to make a correction on this post. My tires were not "Cupping/Scaloping" It is just "inner tire wear". My mistake . Here is a pic of cupping

I had the same problem with my first set, when I bought my new tires my tire shop suggested a four wheel alignment. I had them do it and they showed me the computer print out of the results and they were real bad. They told me that is why my first set was cupped. Just thought I'd let you know.

I purchased the revised control arm "kits" last week and they arrived today. I'm gonna get mine installed at a local trustworthy shop prior to a 4 wheel alignment.
Not a pretty thing: ![]() The "kit" from the TSB is a box with an arm and two bolts (not pictured). But my ZTW, since being lowered, is at -2.5/2.8 degrees camber in the rear. These new arms will give me +1 degrees, so I will be at a more reasonable -1.5/1.8. Just in time for my new 15" tires that I'll be riding on for my trip to [Requires Approval] in Indiana on Friday. The difference in noise from the 17's to the 15's (eerily quiet) makes me think my ZTW is a luxury cruise liner. The noise was expected as the 17's got older, but it would've been a shade quieter if the worn portion didn't 'just barely' stray onto the next parallel tread line. |
