How can I use my iPod for control while plugged in via USB?

I have a 2013 Focus and use my iPod Classic exclusively for listening to music.

I can't stand using Sync to switch between songs, since I can't easily find things like podcasts. It takes way too much time to use Sync and it's taking my attention away from the road way too long, especially since I'm familiar enough with my iPod to operate it without looking at it.

I've been using the headphone jack into the arm rest, but I am losing audio quality by doing it this way. When I plug it via USB, the Sync takes over my iPod and I can't control anything from it. Basically, I want the audio output to be through USB, but still retain control on my iPod like if I was plugging headphones into it. Is this possible??
