I have had my lights tinted here in California for about two weeks now and have not met any cops. I have passed by plenty who have noticed but they could care less. It could just be the cops here since they haven't said anything about my front plate missing either. Anyways, I suggest you use VHT nightshades and a clear coat. One or two coats of that stuff will make your car stand out of the crowd. I have tried the tint films on my jeep and they are a pain. Direct message me if you decide to go with the VHTs and I'll walk you through the steps. Oh and I painted my entire lights including the 3rd brake light and they are still pretty visible even in the sun.

Two light coats of VHT followed by a couple coats of clear coat. Finished off with some wet sanding and polishing. I also taped off the reverse lights so they wouldn't get tinted. When done lightly (not full on black out), tinting has no noticeable effect on light output and police will have no reason or even ability to determine if your lights have been tinted.

On these taillights, I used clear coat mixed myself with a little black paint. Probably did about 5 coats but a lot would depend on how dark you want it and how much black paint is mixed in. BTW These are Euro taillight so they have the red top and orange bottoms; no clear lens.

you'd have plausable deniability
Unlike the headlights which can be separated fairly easily, the taillight lenses are glued to the housings and come apart very hard. I've separated a set of hatch taillights and ended up with a couple cracks in the lenses.
