NASA at VIR - May 3-4 2014

Hey all,
I'm planning on bringing my '12 Focus SE up there for the weekend. I have a CAI, a rear Steeda swaybar, and I have Hawk HPS pads and new rubber set to go on next weekend. This will be my first HPDE event, although I've had a few days at VIR in other cars with instruction. I also have 2 autocrosses in the Ford under my belt.

My question is this for the experienced full course HPDE drivers - should I flush my brade fluid and go to DOT-4?

Also hope to see some other folks there.

Yes, please flush your brake fluid and use the highest temperature dot 4 you can find. Don't use dyed fluids, tech inspectors don't like them.

Fluids are very important. Fresh oil, fresh transmission oil, fresh coolant, etc.

Also, make sure you get your pads seated and "broken in" properly before you head to the track. Repeated hard braking on brand new pads is a no-no and will ruin your rotors and pads very quickly.

I would also recommend you have your tires road-force balanced, if you didn't already plan to do that.

Just returned. NASA put on a great event - I got about 3.5 hours of track time, and 1.5 hours of classroom instruction. I didn't stay for the final run on Sunday.

Learned alot and had a good instructor. The car was great - no issues at all. I had high temp brake fluid added on Monday, and I was using the Hawk street/autocross pads. I did have a problem with heavy braking though - I couldn't get the wheels to lock up. There was good initial bite, good even application during hard braking from 100+mph to 35 mph, and I was able to modulate well. But I couldn't find the ABS at all, which I would have liked because that's when I know I went too far.

I was frustrated by having to wave EVERYONE by during the straights. And I do mean EVERYONE. Even though I may have been faster than a stock Miata, they'd eat me up in the first corner, and I didn't want to be "that guy". I probably wasn't the slowest driver, but I was the slowest car. I maxed out once at 110 on Saturday, and the wind kept me around 105 on Sunday. There was another Focus SE out there, so it was fun talking to him and sharing stories.

Anyways, I am planning to go again. A lot of fun, and a lot of really cool, helpful people. Oh, and I'll have a torque wrench next time too.
