It shares parts with the Ford Escort, not the Mustang.

Talk to Colin.
If MNSCC where still around this would be much easier. Only local site he posts on now is nextxcc.com, that I know of.

Shares the turbo 2.3 Lima with the SVO Mustang. Not 100% the same but similar enough.
And shares the same 4x108 wheel bolt pattern as the early Fox bodies and another Ford creation we may know something about.

My uncle, who is a mechanic, had one for a while several years ago. he said it was a really fun car when he could keep it running. IIRC he had a hard time finding parts for it, but I could be wrong.

I had looked in to these for awhile, but decided against it do to parts availability. I would have been relying on it as a daily driver, so down time waiting for parts would be too much. I still think they would be a lot of fun to build one day. Basically a fuel injected SVO mustang with an IRS. This forum has tons of info on them. You can search around for tons of info on common issues, hard to find parts, and mod potential. http://forum.merkurclub.com/forum/
They share only internal engine components with the mustang, the suspension is unique. Another cool 4cyl turbo rwd car would be the Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler conquests. Parts availability would still be an issue for a daily driver, but there is a lot of mod potential as well

You'd be amazed at what's still available through the dealer, and a lot cheaper than you'd expect. I couldn't find anything I couldn't get from the dealer.

The (Pinto) motor is crude but effective.
There is a lot you can do with it.

One thing that it does need is an intercooler.

Many of you are too young to remember the Roush XR4Ti:

My '84 Mustang had the same valve cover.

I had this as my DD for a while...

Started to rust around the edges so I sold it to someone who could keep it from deteriorating further.
