I am much more pragmatic. I think people get sucked into buying cars and options that they really don't care about or are wowed by advertising propoganda.

Take my wife for instance, 3 years ago when we were shopping for a new car for her the salesmen did a great job dazzling her with some trivial options like ambient lighting and puddle lamps. We would up going up a trim level to get those and within a month or two the novelty wore off and the ambient lights haven't been touched since and the puddle lamps aren't even noticed.

I believe folks will be much more satisfied and save a bunch of money if they are honest with themselves with what they need and what they want.

It can go both ways I think. I think things like ambient lighting and puddle lamps and keyless start are useless, yet when I'm in a car that costs thousands more than my Focus, it always seems cheapened simply by not having them. But, on the whole, I agree with you. Also there is nothing more satisfying than a good to drive base model car that lacks all the silly little distracting features and allows you to just focus on driving.

I chased down a Tangerine Scream ST in the Rushmore mall parking lot in Rapid City, SD. Headed to Rapid again this weekend. Maybe I'll see him again.

There's something quite charming about driving only the exact amount of car you need. Although I don't drive a base model trim currently, I do love a stripped model.

I had quite the opposite reaction from a salesman when I was buying our new escape. I told the salesman EXACTLY what I wanted and the ass hat kept trying to get me to move down a trim level or two. I told him I wanted a Titanium, in black, with black leather, Navigation, and no sun roof or park assist. The guy looked me and my fiancÚ up and down as soon as he saw us, and started to suggest the S and SE. I guess my dirty clothes from the machine shop made it look like I was broke or something... I finally had to tell him straight out. "Dude, we make over 100k a year together, stop trying to convince me to buy the base model or get me another salesman.

Eventually we got exactly what we wanted, and because of his attitude ended up getting an additional $1200 or so off the car, and got the wear and tear plan for free, because he took FOREVER to do the paperwork.

I am a persistent bastard when it comes to my money. I do my best to not let others decide what's best for me.

While driving around doing errands today in Michigan, I saw 7 ST'S and that was only 10 miles away from my home.

You are pretty much at ground zero but here in Colorado I do see Foci here and there but the STs are still kinda rare. The new Escapes out number Foci 10 to 1 easily. A modded Focus becomes even rarer than seeing an ST. I'll see three or four STIs before I even see 1 regular MK3.

I actually like not seeing a Focus everywhere since it makes mine a bit more unique.
