Stock shift knob question/issue

So I picked up my 04 Focus yesterday and the guy had this DISGUSTING worn leather knob on the shifter. He also provided me with the stock one. My stock one, however, does not seem to be threaded. Looked in it with a light but it seems to be a smooth shaft all the way in. Is there a threaded insert missing? I feel like everyone says they screw off but this one doesn't seem like it.....it is a stock one though.

If it's not threaded someone drilled out the threads or stuffed an insert in it to use it on a narrower shifter perhaps. Have you tried to install it yet? That might get you an idea of which issue you are looking at.

Yea i have it doesn't catch at all. Very weird actually. I just picked up another stock one off eBay with a boot for $40. It really looks like it came that way it is perfectly smooth inside. I'll try to get a good pic of it. It was worn a little anyway so I guess it's not terrible getting a newer one but really I am just lost on it lol.

Ones NOT for the SVT had a smooth section for a reverse lockout to slide into, threads deep in the knob.
