Best source for replacement key FOB for 2014 Focus SE

I just picked up a 2014 Focus SE Hatch and am interested in obtaining a pair of replacement keys. I want to put my original keys away and use a second set as my primary keys.

The part number for the original key is cm5a-15k601-ab. I'm not sure what the -ab means or if it matters. So far, I don't see any keys of note on ebay that match exactly with that part number. Once again though, does it matter? I would think it could.

I'd be interested to hear your opinion. I have a local smith who can cut the keys for a nominal fee. What I need are a pair of blanks that will work with the 2014 Focus.

Thanks in advance.

Your best bet is ebay. An uncut key from the dealer is around $200+ I believe.

Or you can go with this option:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/281090129149...84.m1423.l2649

The range is lower on the flip key though.

I went with the second option...the flip key. It works, but you will have to pay anywhere from 30 to 90 bucks for a locksmith to cut and program it.
And yes, the range is less on the flip key. But I don't mind it. For me the convenience of a flip key outweighs having another 20 or 30 feet of range.

You will save money going through ebay, but it took a lot longer for it to ship and take it to a locksmith.

Thanks for the tips. The flip key I heard May be standard issue on focus models sold in Mexico.

I ordered a flip key blank from Taiwan (off of the ebay link above). I'll let y'all know how it goes.

A flip key? LOL. You don't like that dagger that Ford gives you? It's like a murder weapon.

That's funny.

The Flip key has shipped from Taiwan. There are actually quite a few gearheads in Taiwan. Generally they love cars there (though the highways are always clogged it seems), and the whole island is little more than 200 miles long. It's not surprising that it is a big source of parts for many different automakers. I suspect these items will continue to transition to China over time.

I called around to a collection of locksmiths in my town and was surprised to learn that not a whole lot of them either had the equipment to cut the Focus key or were uninterested in only doing the key without also getting $$ for the programming. As is the case with many (all?) Fords today, if you have two keys you can program the chip in a 3rd key (up to a total of 8 keys I believe).

After striking out (surprisingly) with perhaps the most well known shop in town I found another guy who would grind the key for $25. That seems reasonable.

I was able to get the flip key cut today for $25. The tool they use is pretty cool, it is essentially a computer controlled mini milling machine that cost the shop about $7K to purchase. I guess you have to cut quite a few keys to make that pay off.

Anyway, I was able to get the transponder in the flip key programmed without issue following the directions in the owner's manual with the two original keys. The new flip key starts the car just fine.

Programming the door lock/unlock functions though has proven difficult. First, on a 2014 focus it takes 8 cycles of the key (on/off) to enter programming mode (not 4). When you program an OEM key, the focus will chime. When I program the flip key it sends out a double chime but alas, no joy. The auction states the flip key works with a 2012 and a 2013. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with a 2014 but so far, I haven't got the Flip key FOB to program with my new Focus. This is frustrating because the transponder in the Flip Key does program up just fine (starts my car and all that). The focus just doesn't seem to want to program up the lock/unlock buttons.

I've contacted the vendor. We'll see if the unit is just defective or if there is some other incompatibility.

I corresponded with the vendor (Welly@Artiway in Taiwan) who has been helpful so far.

I confirmed that the key door lock/unlock buttons would work with the 2014 Focus SE. This was with difficulty. It took about 9-12 presses of the Lock button before the car would respond. I bought new batteries for it but still experienced intermittent operation. Once I installed the new batteries in the unit, I was able to confirm functional operation with all the buttons at least once.

The vendor agreed to send me a replacement unit. When that arrives I'll attempt the programming and verification process once more and report back. Since it's coming from Taiwan it'll be about 10 days before it gets here.

Here is a photo of the original OEM key and the flip key in question:

I have the same one and have it programmed to my 2013 SE w/ no issues.
