I can only assume the folks at Blackstone are letting the children do the reports now. This is far from a stellar report and the recommendation to run this oil longer is just plain crazy at best. The oil has sheared, sheared to the extreme at 8.7 and kindly remember, it's also oxidized back to 395F flash point. Had this oil not oxidized as much as it did, it would have probably done damage to the engine with the shearing to less than a 20. This oil is toast as is reflected in the higher than normal wear metals. Granted, the engine isn't going to fall apart any time soon but this is NOT the oil for this engine. If you have the synthetic bug, use Pennzoil Platinum next time and watch the report go to stellar. If you pay a premium for an oil you should get premium results. Obviously, except maybe to Blackstone, you aren't getting premium results. FWIW TBN is just the oils ability to neutralize combustion acids, not a milestone to base an oil on.

From the Petroleum Quality Institute of America -

http://www.pqiamerica.com/TBN.htm

"Total base number (TBN) is a measure of a reserve alkalinity of a lubricant. The test is relevant to internal combustion engines due to the acidic byproducts of combustion generated when gasoline and diesel fuel are burned. These byproducts, including SOx, NOx, and others enter the crankcase via blow-by gases getting past the piston rings.

In addition to acids entering the engine crankcase from blowby, acids are normally generated in other areas of the engine due to heat, oxidation, and other chemical processes".

TBN isn't for just neutralizing combustion acids.

TBN is critical in determining if an oil is suitable for continued use or not and in my humble opinion an oil analysis report without TBN numbers is not too wise.

As for Royal Dutch Shell, the owners of Pennzoil, do we really want to support the below with our hard earned money? Personally, I would never purchase products from a company that did this and in so doing, have my hard earned money contribute to this. No way in hell!
