Sorry about that... I didn't mean that as an email address, instead, that's actually his forum name on FJ.

I just experienced the same problem of not being able to engage REVERSE at all in my SVTF. Engagement of REVERSE was getting more difficult for several months, and finally, it would not go into reverse at all.

In my case, I had to shorten the length of the uppermost shifter cable, which is the cable dedicated to the "side to side" shift lever movement. Upon observing the linkage, it was clear that the lever that engages REVERSE was not being pulled far enough. It was as if the cable stretched over the years.

Popping out the orange clip at the end of the cable that attaches to the transmission linkage was very difficult because it's both tightly inserted and hard to reach with any sort of tools. Note that there are various styles of these orange retainer clips. I used a pair of adjustable slip joint pliers to both "press" the clip partially out, and then finish its removal by gripping it and pulling while rocking the clip back and forth.

Once out, I'd suggest moving the cable end in a manner to shorten the overall cable length if you're having difficulty engaging reverse gear. Be careful not to stress the cable mountings when pulling the cable to the side, as they can crack or break. The end result of this adjustment had the transmission shifting into all gear even smoother than ever. It was a frustrating, difficult, and time-consuming task...but it worked like a charm!
