Exclamation just a heads up for headlight retro fitters

firstly i love my retrofit. its not perfect just like me. the hardware is solid i couldnt fault it there. they started up the first time every time. but that was with the gen 1 ballasts.

folks using the new gen 2 morimoto ballast
or morimoto controller may find cold weather ignition of the bulb nearly impossible.

i have had real trouble with the new units on cold days. some days i dont have any headlights at 6 am and have to crawl to work on my fogs alone. other times i get just one to go.

i think the answer may lay in the size and construction of the ballast case. gen 1 ballasts were around 50% larger. the circuit board was dead center in the case and encased in a silicone and silica sand. about half an inch all the way around. the board inserted like a cassette and was sealed by plates on both ends.

these new ballasts have a circuit board that is attached to a backing plate and the case covers that. not much room for insulating silica and silicone. now these ballasts might now be able to withstand vibrations or temp changes as well as before.

ive had the new ballasts for just a couple of months now and have already had to have the replaced under the warranty. a quick chat with tech at TRFS confirmed they know about an issue with these ballasts and are trying to find a solution. now im not sure if thats the truth or just verbal pacification.

we're only a week or two away from steady cold temps and if you havnt experienced the low temps yet dont get caught in the dark.

Define cold weather lol.

Seriously though, I had my retrofits in negative weather, and they never gave me any complaint. I may have had the older setup, im not sure.

Either way, I would say just do your best to insulate the ballast, and you will probably be fine.

You wont find a nicer company to do business with. All of their products are top notch.

Im not exactly sure if its the ballast or the controller. I never had an issue when using the old relay harness except for the relays rusting out then eventually the wiring harness rusting out (its mishigan so...). But with those you could just stroll down to the parts store and grab a new relay for a few bucks.

The warranty pricess was suoer easy. You got a problem? Lets see yup your under warranty. Just send us a pic of the serial number in the ballast with its leads cut and your new one is on the way.

I had headlight issues for a while with my HID's. Kept blowing ballast and bulbs. Nothing a relay didnt take care of. Maybe thats what you need?

I'm looking to do a retrofit on my new truck in the next few days. Is this just the 5five ballasts?

I have the 3five in my focus, many cold mornings last year and not a single misfire or stick issue from the projectors, ballasts or bulbs.

The first set I bought the driver side one stuck like crazy, and the rotation was slightly off. So I bought a spare set of headlights (original set is in the for sale section for you guys as I don't need them.) and a new set of projectors and installed them. Love them and not a single issue and its been about 50 weeks now.

i never had an issue with the gen 1 55 ballast and really never had an issue with the gen 2 55 until i had to replace my relay harness with the morimoto controller. but i did that in the summer when it was much much warmer. id avoid the controller and stick with the relay harness. much more simplistic and affordable
