2000 Focus SE SPI engine noise - crickets....

2000 Focus SE Split Port 2.0L, 128,000 miles. "P" VIN. I have posted several times in the past couple days practically begging for help, no response. I am desperate, looking for help from experienced Focus Split Port owners or mechanics.

Daughter drove the car on freeway, probably in "2" instead of drive, went about a mile at high rpm.

Caused a loud knocking noise initially, although once I let it cool down and started it again the noise was much quieter but still there. Fired right up as usual and ran smooth as normal, just the knocking sound.

Drained the oil thru a filter, no evidence of metal parts, although a few very small flakes, brass or something in color.

Did a compression test on the cylinders - cold. Kind of a crappy tester, so tested each cylinder 3 times. All 4 cylinders tested between 76 - 79 psi. Seemed low, but I was encouraged that at least they were all consistent.

I am aware of the problem with this engine dropping valve seats, but with the consistent readings on the comp test I'm not sure that is the case here. My original thought upon hearing the knock was it spun a rod bearing.

Car is currently in the driveway on jack stands, I REALLY need to get it back on the road. I don't have a shop, and don't have any money. I welcome any advice or comments....... Thank you!

The knock from spun bearing is because generally the bearing is chewed enough to let piston begin to lightly strike the head. There can be a deeper noise lower down in engine that can be the rod knocking on crank journal, but piston striking head is the one you hear easiest from above, and same noise if a piece of seat comes loose to get stuck in head. You may not see evidence of piston damage in plug hole if the hit is still small. If bearing spun you should find shreds of it in oil drain.

SOHCs generally not known for spun bearings, but if low on oil? And anything is possible.

I dropped a valve on an AMC engine way back in the '70s and it bent just at the piston hit, and only left a slight contact ding in piston that I ran with new valve and even same head. Virtually no damage there, I was one lucky sucker. Motor though knocked like the dickens, and running only on seven, we swore it was going to be blown.

You never know until torn down. Hoping not of course but there it is.
