install CD changer under passenger seat?

Hi All,

I've recently purchased a 2002 Ford Focus LX Hatchback (1.6).

It still has the original cassette player in it. I'd like to install a 5/6 disc CD changer somewhere in the car, leaving the cassette radio where it is.

I've seen elsewhere that the changer should be installed under the passenger seat but the details are sketchy. Has anyone got any experience of this?

There are no You Tube tutorials (apparently) so I am a bit stumped.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I installed a CD changer under the passenger seat of my 1999 Contour SVT.
I made an aluminum plate bent to fit, bolted under the front seat bolts, with a flat portion across with drilled holes to fit the Cd changer. Easy to run the changer wires from center console to back of seat then out to Changer. (never had to take seat out of car. just take out bolts so i could move it some.)
there are air vents under most seats for the rear heating etc.. usually nearer the back under the seats. You really do not want to block them.

I finally abandoned the changer due to it's not working so well. had nothing to do with install.

The changer faced front. and was flush with the front of seat bottom when seat was all the way back on tracks. So the ejected CD pack would stick out in front of seat.

Thanks for the speedy reply :)

"Easy to run the changer wires from center console to back of seat then out to Changer"

I'm a complete newb at all this, couple of questions about 'easy'!

(To make things as simple as possible, I'm hoping to get a mark 1 FF CD changer.)

Presumably, there is a spare female point to the rear of the centre console when I pull it out that I can plug the mark 1 CD changer into?

Also presumably, will I have to run the lead behind the dash, under the carpet and feed it through a hole I make under the passenger seat?

ps. really like the idea of the changer facing front, hadn't considered that as a possibility :)

thanks for your help so far, greatly appreciated :)

For the wires (maybe) you have to get in under the console. Some can be opened easy. some not. Also can try to slide wires under passenger side on console bottom without taking any console parts off.
Some changers have a 'one wire' solution. Some the stereo pair AND the control wires.
If you get a changer with the one wire that would be a breeze to stuff under the passenger side console bottom edge.
But even three wires is do-able.
If you are not mechanically inclined I would NOT attempt the remove the center console.
Seat bolts are easy.. the center console can be a heartbreaker when you BUST IT screwing around with it. Or cannot get it back in place and have it STAY because you broke off the hidden pins. LOL.

what i have seen on you tube is the use of two keys (v shaped) which you insert into the holes on the console and this supposedly releases it, albeit with some jiggling. this part of the project actually seemed quite doable, in your experience, does it require more than just using the keys to get the console out? ie screwdrivers etc
thanks for your input on this

On MY car i had manual tranny, so i just popped open the shifter boot. And that was a different car. So for your car i have no idea how your center console is held down.

You may be better fit just to abandon the whole setup. Go buy a basic mp3 player like an ipod nano, and get a headunit with ipod compatibility. Probably cheaper, and you dont have to carry a gigantic case of CDs around.
